You are doing a lot to check but I would just return it and get a replacement. I had a bad 420 when I bought my first one. Not the same issues as you though mine would only read cds.

BTW I use custom for SDR and Cinema Pro for HDR, I keep different picture modes for SDR and HDR because Sony TVs donít usually store SDR and HDR settings separate from one another, i.e. if you make an adjustment on one then it may not benefit the other when it switches over to it.
Something funky is going on, thankfully with standard Blu-ray discs you don't have to mess around with them if your display has a decent preset or is calibrated properly.

I'd try resetting the player and picture setting on the TV (joy down your old settings if you need to) and try everything on auto, then run some test patterns and well known discs.

Got my shit sorted out! It was a setting in the XBR 900E menu, nothing to do with the new 420 player options lol. For some reason the Sony is allowing/forcing (in both Cinema Pro and Home) a 1080p/HD/SDR source to run with HDR and bt. 2020 applied, even when most every option is set to "auto", it defaults to those options enabled, my previous 4k player did not operate that way. So with those on, it was literally frying the BD image and naturally when I change the two options down to normal in the sony picture settings (HDR mode OFF and SDR/rec. 709), the 1080 content looks amazing again.

Only negative is, when I pop a 4k disc back in, I have to manually turn those options back up in the Sony menu (HDR mode ON, BT. 2020 color space)…the "auto" option doesn't seem to work on the tv with this new player feeding it. It would be ideal of course if it worked properly, I could use Cinema Pro for my UHD/HDR content and Cinema Home and it's particular settings for SDR/HD. Weird...but I'm ok with that, both sources look reallllly nice now, just have to tweak two options based on the source and all is fine. I'm happy.

Thanks for all the input and suggestions, gents!

I will post updates if something new arises (that I could share) also if new firmware is released, check its content for improvements we've been discussing.
To each and their own how they feel about the likeliness and possibilities of having various fixes/features implemented in the matter.

I thank you all again for your helpfulness.

And best of luck; in the most positively optimistic way of hope.
Amen; we live on a beautiful blue planet.
It's not what we believe and say; it's what we do and how we do it.
Panasonic, if you're reading this, just do it.

Hi Robert, just curious if you received the MkII unit and got chance to compare. Thanks.

Hulu isn't available on the Panny machines though??? It's just Youtube, Netflix, and Prime Video. It's best to use TV or a streaming box for that anyway.

Panasonic just sent me the first mass production UB9000P1K. We'll have them for sale by the end of August.

The only upgrade is a new 2-channel DAC from ESS as the factory AKM that made the original DAC was destroyed in a fire. The signal to noise specs are slightly better on the new ESS DAC, but from my limited testing I did not hear any easily noticeable difference with the few CDs I played.

Thank you Panasonic!

Did you happen to notice what firmware version is on it? Fingers crossed maybe they finally fixed some of the long standing issues.

It's version 1.68, but don't get excited as most if not all of the update is to manage the new ESS DAC.

Give me a list of things you want me to test and I'll post my findings.

When using Dolby Vision, the Knives Out 4K disc freezes up a bit after the 2 hour mark. I believe it's 2:01:24, to be exact.

If you have that disc and could test that, it would be greatly appreciated.

This freeze only occurs in Dolby Vision, but happens every time at that spot.

Good that there is a new model coming but I don't see the need to upgrade my UB9000. I to wish there would be a new firmware update for this model and the new model coming in August.
