There are still Region Free hardware modded 203s available from several dealers.

I bought my 103 four years ago from JVB Digital and I would personally recommend them.
I just bought a 203 so that I can now use my 103 as a spare (no interest or capability for 4K atm).

There is another run on 203s being produced that will arrive around June. Those will likely only be sold in-house from Oppo direct so people that want region free at that point are either going to have to buy a kit and do the soldiering themselves, or else get the solution that plugs into the back (which IIRC cuts down on the usability of some inputs).

The big feeding frenzy was over the 205s which are effectively sold out everywhere now save for whatever is going up on eBay now at a 3X markup over the original $1300 msrp.

The last of the 203s in dealer hands will move a little slower, but they will still be sold out well before Oppo gets the last production run in a few months from now.

The 103 is the best disc player I have ever used. Period. At this point in the game, with the way things are looking, I don't expect to see another player offer anywhere near the feature and build quality found in either the 203 or 205 at anywhere close to their price.
There will be players that approach it- and even some that surpass it as far as certain 4K playback capabilities. That's pretty much a given.

I just can't imagine anything will be as comprehensively awesome as the Oppos.
There is a reason for their rabid, cult like following.

Anyway, point is the discs are coming - software tools now ready to go, hardware will be available shortly, content to follow. HDR10+ is part of the UHD BD spec and two major studios Warner/Fox signed on to provide content. The Oppo 203/205 might even get HDR10+, but it also might not given the situation.

OP asked for alternatives to Oppo, right now the best one looks like Panasonic UB9000 (or for less cash, the UB820). Which both happen to support HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. So unless SACD needed it would probably be one's best bet as both an Oppo replacement and to cover all HDR formats of the UHD Blu-ray spec.

From a business prospective Panasonic will be left behind because Sony has a lot more resources to draw upon.

Sony has a much larger fan base, and the players have a decent amount of discussion concerning controlling the players by installers. Did you notice the UBP-X1000 at Crutchfield is now only $499, $200 off. Sony is moving to Dolby Vision, the replacement for the x800,x1000 are not shown yet.

Sony sells all kinda things that will work with it. AVR’s, LCD TV’s, OLED TV’s now. It’s Bluetooth capable, can pair with wireless speaker setup or headphones. As far as installers Oppo was #1, Sony was #2. Check on it, ask around.

Here a rack kit for the UBP-x1000 to show they planned on this player being used by the CI crowd.

Could the available connector on the Cambridge board (bottom right section), located at the exact same place as the one I’ve used to connect the region-free kit sold by bluraychip.dk for my OPPO UDP-203 player, serve the same purpose on the Cambridge player(s)? The same kit is installed in my OPPO BDP-93 player. The region setting procedure is the same for both OPPO players. I’ll keep an eye on Cambridge players… just in case the worst happens with my OPPO players.

region setting procedure is the same for most of those kits however even one OPPO kit to another are NOT compatible with another OPPO..ie, 83 KIt will not work with 80 , 95,103, 203 and visa versa. They look so much alike but they will not work with any other player than the one they were designed for.

I have already seen a 205 and 203 going for scalping prices on Audiogon.com and outrageous prices for these on Amazon. I have an OPPO but wish I had put in for the 203 much earlier. Since I never stream and only use BR discs, the 203 would have been perfect for me.

Sharks the Oppo 203 is meant for 4K Blu. You say your self 'Since I never stream and only use BR discs'. Save your money

It has been confirmed many times by several forum members that the mod kits for many older Oppo models work with both the Oppo 203 and 205.

Oppo delivered on their planned limited 205 run. Since I had registered my email address with them right after they announced discontinuance, I received an email invite from them the other day and put my order in for a new 205 on Friday. It shipped the same day and will arrive by the end of the week.

I didn't sign up for the 203 notifications since I had just purchased a new one a couple of months before. Nonetheless, I haven't heard of any new 203's coming out of Oppo yet.

I didn't know there was a 203 list. I just saw the sign up for the 205, and mine is due to be delivered today. Given the choice I still would have ordered the 205, but was there a 203 list?
If so, I gave a couple people some bad information.

Yes, there is/was a list for both additional 203 and 205s, not sure if the lists are still available or closed at this point though.

The 203 list is still out there but doesn't list any ETA's on when they may get anymore in.
