Arrow JVC 8K Laser Projectors, NZ7, NZ8 & NZ9

Lots of new projectors and other new a/v equipment launching today at CEDIA, live and virtually.

One of the biggest announcements is JVC's three new 8K Laser Projectors, NX7, NZ8 and NZ9. More details and specs are on our website.

Here's the first Youtube video from SpareChange and me announcing these new high performance 8K RGB Laser Projectors:

Hi Robert, I tried to wait and figured you would be posting, but wasn't sure. I don't mind having my post deleted.

Update: I just requested that a mod delete my thread.

Hhhhmmm!

I'm disappointed at those native contrast ratios. Only 100,000:1 native contrast for the flagship. I was hoping for an improvement.

My DreamVision is now a fair few years old and it pumps out 160,000:1 native contrast.
Why did JVC go backwards on native contrast?

I'm a bit disappointed too, but supposedly the excellent laser dimming will make the contrast and black floor better than a blub with dynamic iris. The reason for the backwards native contrast is because of the new 4K D-ILA devices. These are totally different than the 1080p D-ILA devices. JVC worked on maximizing the contrast on the 1080p ones for years, but there is still work to be done in maximizing the 4K chips. Your Dreamvision is a JVC RS640, which was the best native contrast for 1080p. It will take more time for JVC to reach that level for the 4K ones. I think JVC was focusing a lot on the BluEscent laser system and shrinking it to fit in the NX5/7/9 chassis. Again, the laser dimming should help get the contrast and black level to really good levels, but someone would need to test and compare the old 1080p JVCs to these new ones. Seems to me that in the upcoming two-four years JVC will look to improve the native contrast of these laser projectors.

I'm not understanding. The specs on mine below says 4K. Am I mis reading or not understaing something? It's okay if I am.
Not that I've actually counted the pixels I can't see any pixels or structure which make focusing very difficult.

Surely they could meet the 160,000:1 contrast ratio from an older model.
Mine is the Siglos Ultra 3 on the right.

Why did JVC go backwards on native contrast?
That DreamVision uses e-shift on 1080p panels to achieve 4K resolution. The panels on these JVC’s are native 2160p panels which the higher models actually e-shift but to achieve 8K resolution.

Getting higher contrast with native 4K panels on projectors is quite tricky because you have way more pixels but still a really small panel where you’re trying to control light output. Hence the drop in contrast. In fact, all projector model lines that used 1080p panels but switched to native 4K panels dropped in contrast compared to their respective previous models that used 1080p panels (e.g. Sony and JVC). Still though, outside uber-high-end projectors that go well into 6-figures prices, JVC still has the projectors with the best contrast ratios that also use native 4K panels. And the inclusion of the laser (and its dynamic dimming) is quite appealing.

It seems they’re also now able to accept and display 4K/120fps with both HDMI 2.1 inputs so it’s a step in the right direction imo. Not to mention they still seem to be the ones with the best HDR tone mapping on any available consumer projector, and I read they might have actually improved upon it to make it even better.

Ordered the NZ8 myself today. Even though these ratio numbers don't seem that good, I heard the same when I went from my RS400 to RS1000 and it bests it in every way.

Some more info on these units.

Here's an article about the new JVC laser projectors

I’m hoping for the NZ8 myself! Would love to get it.

The NZ9 is obviously the best in specs but NZ8 has the core features. Pretty much the main benefit then is better contrast on 170” plus screen sizes. Considering the $10,000 price jump, NZ8 is a better value proposition.

I doubt I’ll have room to go that big so NZ8 at 150” or so should suffice.

waiting for reviews by Deering. Happy with 120" screen with 2000 model with Frame Adapt tone mapping. Theater Optimizer made it better.

Looking at the NZ8 myself but not until a mid 2022 timeframe at the earliest. Still no Dolby Vision possibility?

DV not applicable really for home projection.

I don't think I would miss it much but if I'm dropping $15k it would be nice to have all the options.

I think the NZ9 will benefit only the people that sit really really close to the screen. It will be hard to tell the differences of the optics unless you sit close. If you watch at a normal distance, the NZ8 will be perfect. I myself want an NZ8, but I'll have to wait until I have enough funds. By the way, none of these projectors are worth getting unless you have a dedicated home theater room that is exceptionally dark with 100% light control. Preferably all black velvet walls and ceiling and black carpet.

In October of 2021 JVC is releasing the worlds first consumer projector that supports HDR10+ (3 different projectors to choose from). I am hoping that one day Sony comes out with projectors that offer both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision HDR feature. So far no consumer projector offers the Dolby Vision HDR feature. Which makes me wonder if Dolby has some exclusive agreement with flat panel companies. Sony and JVC projectors also support the legacy Blu-ray 3D feature.

Here is the link on more information regarding the JVC LCOS projectors.

In addition to seating distance with the better lens, the light path and contrast is a bit better (reduced internal reflections, etc.) etc. in the RS3000 vs RS1000/2000 today and that may carry over to the new laser units. However, there have been further optical block tweaks to the NZ9. But yeah, either way, this is the unit for someone want to squeeze out a small bit of extra performance for a lot more money compared to the NZ8 - but such is the nature of high end A/V products...

I sat in on some of the JVC Zoom seminars on these new units. Got to ask some questions.

I'm on the fence myself. I was considering the RS2100 although the price is higher than I expected. I might just go with the RS1000 instead as I am not sure if I will like the laser dimming as my eyes are sensitive to fluctuations that the dimming provided by the RS4500 and Epson LS10000 for example. The dimming would have to be improved further otherwise I would turn it off. Also, I don't put a ton of hours on my projector - maybe 600 a year. I don't game either. And the JVC lamps are very stable for lamps. Now, the RS2100 laser does provide 400 more lumens than a brand new RS1000 lamp so that could be a plus and the RS4500 laser has been reported to have a really nice slow drop off even after several thousands of hours. All new units have the same respective panel and lens from prior model. Same native contrast. Same dynamic tone mapping but with some granular tweak controlling. HDR10+ is not a big deal to me. Decisions, decisions, but sort of leaning on the RS1000. Not completely ruling out the RS2100 either.

The RS1000 is no slouch. I love mine and people are blown away by it every single time. Helps that I have a Stewart Studiotek screen as well.

I've head nothing but wonderful things about it. Incredible value too (relative to other 4K projectors).

These all have a 4K light engine and use e-shift technology. Native 8K projectors do not exist yet for the consumer market (there are some $250,000+ DLP native 8K projectors).

The biggest feature of these new JVC projectors that I am surprised no one has mentioned yet in this thread, is that these are the very first projectors that offer the HDR10+ feature. Which is ideal for 4K Blu-ray and 4K streaming. I wish JVC would had added Dolby Vision HDR feature also.
