I got a new player! Glad I passed on the CLD-D504 I saw a few months ago. I got this DVL-700 for $40 less than the asking price of the 504. I was looking for a dual-side player with a digital audio output. My other player is a CLD-1090.

I also framed this guy.

There's a potential bumper-sticker if ever there was one!

The Nightmare Before Christmas (2774 CS)

I remember 'listening' to this the first time I spun it up and being amazed at how good it sounded on my system.

Comes with a hardcover book detailing the movie, interviews, development art etc.

Got that set too. Gorgeous design, and a really lovely book. The only hardcover version I believe, as they later reprinted it for mass market, but in paperback.

I think they simply slapped this LaserDisc transfer onto the original DVD release in 2000, and ported over all the extras.

I just picked up and spun the MGM/UA double feature set of DOCTOR X/MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM which is the only way to see WAX MUSEUM in proper two strip technicolor as the DVD for some insane reason recolored all greens to blue which 2 strip was incapable of producing.
Great way to see these classic groundbreaking in ways 2 strip color horrors which were lost for decades. DOCTOR X if even better on DVD in the WB Legends of Horror DVD set.

Just grabbed a CLD-97 for $230 from a local seller. Claims he only ever owned 3 laserdiscs and he used it primarily for CDs. Even with that being the case, he had another CD player he used as a primary player.

Soooo.... this thing SHOULD be like new. First disc I tried locked up and spit the disc out. 2nd attempt, it played just fine. Hoping it was just from not being used. All in all, very pleased with the condition of the machine. Hoping it lasts a long time

Even if it has been sitting relatively unused, the belt that controls the tray could be in bad shape. cracked, warped, etc. Recommend checking it, or at least cleaning it. Might be super dusty in there too, as players that get used a lot tend to not be dusty, since the discs spin so fast they blow away any dust that accumulates.

Nice grab though! I still need a new player to replace my broken one, but I am afraid of buying one online and having it damaged during shipping...

And regreasing the tracks. That stuff tends to solidify over the years if not used.

Actually, my player has the same problem. It does a kind of winding-down buzzing noise before it spits the disc out, right?

Could be. If the belt hardens into a particular shape, it has to "break" that shape so it can grip properly. But the motor is pushing on it the whole time, which would make that buzzing sound.

Possibly the laser assembly itself is taking a long time to get back to its default position.

Pioneer CLD-900 and 60 minute/side (NTSC) discs issue:

Pioneer Video Manufacturing had been making 60 minute/side discs
for several years before the CLD-900 was introduced in the early 1985.

For a few years, (CD format) Digital Audio was only available on
55 minute/side discs.

My CLD-900 played these 55 minute/side discs satisfactorily, but had
severe crosstalk on the 60 minute/side discs.

I tried some of my 60 minute/side discs on other CLD-900s at some
audio/video dealers, same severe crosstalk problems.

I called Pioneer, they said take it to a local Pioneer repair place
(known for dealing with difficult to fix problems) and have the Optical
System replaced, I did, no improvement.

Any idea how Pioneer managed to make an LD player that couldn't
properly play many LDs?

You kind of answered your own question there.

The very first CD player apparently had only one DAC circuit so the left and right channels were slightly out of sync, too.

But ultimately you're missing the point that it did play all the LDs out at the time.
