Oh I know... it took an hour and a half to back up 80gigs... I decided on getting the 1Tb more because the price difference between a 520G and 1TB drive wasn't that much, hopefully having 1TB available will not require any further backups in the future, but I guess you never know...

Its also not good to leave your console on that long. I think it took about 4 hours or so with my 160gb. I dont think I'll ever attempt to backup my 500gb

I have 750GB and it took about 7 days for it to back up and restore, with no breaks.

I posted this in the other thread, but i purchased the infamous 2 slim bundle last week on black friday. Not going to lie, been having a few problems with it. From the disc drive clicking everytime I insert a disc, or clicking and making weird sounds every so often, the fan kicking into high gear and being able to hear it over the game or movie, or the fact that when I was playing Playstation all stars the game crashed forcing me to do a hard set. This console may be going back to target. I'm afraid this thing is going to crap out any second.

You actually let it run for 7 days straight? At that point, Id be worrying about my electricity bill and getting a YLOD. Do you have PS+? With that, I no longer see a need to backup my PS3

If I was ever going to do a back up then all I would keep on my system would be game saves. Everyhing else would get deleted and I'd just download it once my new console was up and running. Quicker than waiting for everything to transfer.

I'm really not bothered about keeping mine on for long periods either way.

I'm still running a launch model 60gb and it's still my main BD player and gaming console, so whenever I stop playing a game it goes straight into use as a BD player. Never had an issue with it over the past 6 years.

I'd leave it on for days doing the GT5 24hour enduro races too.

Im assuming you've never had a YLOD or live in a hot area. Getting one of those in Florida pretty much scared me straight for leaving my PS3 running for more than a coupleof hours

Nope never had a YLOD. Live in South Wales so I guess it's around 10c average temp. Bit warmer inside when the heatings on.

I think the biggest factor in my consoles long life is probably just dumb good luck. It's got loads of room to breath since it's mounted on a wall and it's always been stood upright. Smoke and pet free home and it's cleaned regularly. Other than that all it's had is a 150gb HDD put in.

Not a bad little take for a only a weeks worth of sells.

Sony sells 525,000 PlayStation 3 units Thanksgiving week

Quote:
Sony sold 525,000 PlayStation 3 units during the crucial Thanksgiving week, the Japanese electronics giant said Friday.

That's fewer than the 750,000 Xbox 360s that Microsoft sold the week of Thanksgiving, but it beat Nintendo's Wii U and its Wii, which sold 400,000 and 300,000 units that week, respectively.

Sony said total sales of PlayStation hardware, games and peripherals were up 9% from Thanksgiving week 2011.

The company said it also sold 160,000 of its portable PS Vita devices, whose sales have been struggling.

I'm currently watching my first DVD on the new Ultra Slim. I'm really impressed with how well it's upscaling. IMO it's doing a noticeably better job than my old Gen 1 console. This console also runs MUCH quieter than my old one.

Well, it happened... My 60gb fatty died on me. 6 years solid service from her. Not once did she ever moan.

I opened her up, removed the BD drive and recovered my disc, Zodiac no less... I'm sure the irony isn't lost on you.

Now I have no choice but to buy a new PS3. Sad thing is I've got no way of recovering anything from my old HDD. Unless plugging it in to a SATA USB dock will work, and I can save what I need to my Computer.

Game saves were all backed up to the cloud thanks to PS+ and all my games I can just re download. So I guess I won't even need to recover anything from my old HDD. Would you guys agree?

All I had on it other than my game downloads and saves was a few MP3s and a couple HD movies.

So I'm just better off buying a new PS3 and just re downloading my games and saves right?

well frankly you dont have a choice unless you can successfully repair the system yourself or get a third party to. Considering you have all your saves uploaded via Plus, then you are good to go. Everything other than videos purchased via PSN can be redownloaded. Wow, its kinda ironic this happened to you after what you were saying the other day.

I know right!

I'm not too bummed out by it. I was pissed that the force eject wouldn't work because it's a pain in the arse taking that damn thing apart, there's way too many screws

I got my disc back though so thats all I was really bothered about.

I just can't deactivate that console now, although I still have my second activation free. So it's not too important.

I guess the only thing thats a pain is that I will lose all my themes, and my US PSN account, since I can't remember my log in

So my 1TB HDD came today. And it desn't install perfectly on to the new slim.

If you follow the instructions that appear when you turn on the first couple steps will go ok. But when it tries to build the database it fails at 70% everytime.

Work around....

Enter safe mode. For those that don't know:

Quote:
Safe mode is a feature for starting the PS3™ system with the "minimum required functionality" if the system is no longer able to start up normally due to an action was taken (such as turning off the system's MAIN POWER switch while data was being written to the hard disk drive). By starting up the system in safe mode then executing a menu option, you may be able to eliminate the symptom. Please note there is a chance that safe mode options will not fix the problem and you system will require service.

We do not recommend using the options in Safe Mode unless you are experiencing issues with the PLAYSTATION 3. Some of these options could result in loss of data.

If you choose to perform one of the Safe Mode options, please back up your data before attempting to enter safe mode (when possible).

Safe Mode is only available to PS3's with system software 2.60 or greater installed.

When to Use Safe Mode

Execute safe mode when the PS3™ is experiencing the following symptoms:
  1. When the PS3™ system is started up, the XMB™ menu is not displayed (only the wave screen background appears)
  2. When the PS3™ system is started up, nothing appears on the screen
  3. When the PS3™ system is started up, a message stating is displayed > > Restore operation > Restart
  4. Original message is displayed again or the system stops during restoration.
  5. When the PS3™ system is started up, a message stating is displayed > > Rebuild > Failure > System stops while formatting hard disk drive.
  6. The system stops while restarting after a PS3™ system update or while updating or rebuilding the database. The situation does not improve even when the system is restarted.

Safe Mode Options

In Safe Mode, you will have the following options:
  • Restart System - Ends safe mode and starts up the PLAYSTATION 3 normally.
  • Restore Default Settings - Performs the same operations as on the XMB™, and also deletes PlayStation®Network account information from the system.
  • Restore File System - Attempts to repair all areas on the hard disk drive where files can be saved. Corrupted data may be erased if it cannot be recovered.
  • Rebuild Database - Deletes messages, playlists, changes made on screens, trimming information for pictures in , video thumbnails, video playback history and video resume information.
  • This operation may take a long time depending on the type and number of data items.
  • Restore PS3 System - IMPORTANT: All data will be lost by performing this step.
  • This will reformat the hard drive on the PLAYSTATION 3, deleting all data and restoring it to as if it just came out of the box. This is the same as on the XMB.
  • System Update - Updates the PS3 system software. This can only be done with an update file already saved on an external storage media.

Activating Safe Mode

Step 1: Turn off the PLAYSTATION 3 by holding the Power button on the front of the unit till the Power light is red.

Step 2:
  1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, meaning the PLAYSTATION 3 is powering on.
  2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep, indicating the video reset.
  3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a third beep and the system will power off (Power light is red).

Step 3:
  1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, again for the PLAYSTATION 3 to power on.
  2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep for video reset.
  3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a quick double beep. At that point release the Power button. If you succeeded in activating Safe Mode, you will see a message on the screen saying, "Connect the controller using a USB cable and then press the PS button."
You will then see a menu

Although on the new slim there is another option, 1a. Using that option sorted the problem although you don't get to keep any of thedata from the flash memory. Which was ok since all my saves are online.

So now I've got 830+GB to fill up

Don't bother last month I had an error that wouldn't let my system start up and froze upon signing in to my account. So I did a backup/restore and every time I tried restoring it always stopped at 96% and every time I tired restoring it took 2hrs.

Yeah, if you are going to use a new console/HDD just worry about getting your save data sorted. Any music, video or games you've downloaded can all be gotten again once the new console/drive is up and running.

I'm in the process of finally being able to have all my downloaded content on the HDD at the same time.

Turns out that you can only have 32 downloads in the background at any one time lol. Why 32? I really don't know. Seems like an odd number but there you go.

Still got about another 30+ downloads waiting to go, so it's going to take a while yet to re download everything but it's great to finally be able to have everything on one drive and not have to worry about deleting things whenever I want to get a new game.

My HDD backup & upgrade went pretty much flawlessly, but I realize that may not be the case everytime.
