Default Atmos vs rear speaker placement

If you had to choose, would you rather...
1. Choose a 5.1.2 surround sound speaker setup with the two Atmost speakers above you but no back speakers. (3 front, 2 side, 2 above)
2. Choose a 7.1 setup without atmost but with 2 rear speakers. (3 front, 2 side, 2 behind)

This is the set up I currently have (although I have one one extra sub) and I would definitely prefer it over the other. In my experience, rear channels aren't utilized that often anyway, and Atmos is a treat.

Number 1. Many releases have Atmos so best to utilize that setup if you can

I have a 5.1.2 system as well. 7.1 seems impractical. I think most people have their sofa against the wall, with nothing behind.

It depends on your room, seating (distances) and speakers.

Good point, this is the case with me, not much room behind us. Thanks!

EDIT: I previously had a bunch of wrong info about atmos here. Pulled it out to not confuse things.
Atmos is a format, not just height speakers, but My vote is still for the 5.1.2!

I don't have atmos, but my understanding of it would lead me to believe overheads are more important than additional surround speakers. Placing objects within a 7.1 space would enlarge the space behind, but everything would remain in the same plane. Adding overhead speakers would allow more of a sphere-like soundstage. Maybe not as deep, but bigger overall and with much more depth, equaling much better immersion. Much more flexibility to place the objects in 3D rather than 2D.

Just my theoretical understanding- not based on any actual experience.

I find height channels to be more immersive & fun to listen to than side surrounds, so 5.1.2 for me all day. If I wasn't into Atmos/DTS:X at all, I even personally prefer 5.1 over 7.1.

What I found odd about Atmos (back when I still had a sound system) is how it pretty much collapsed the rear sound field and directed so much more information into the overheads/heights. This is from using 5.1.2 albeit with heights rather than overheads as I couldn't be bothered to install overheads. Not that that should've made a difference to how the side rears performed.
