Hope you liked it. It is way better than the Pyramid blu-rays.
I agree with you..it is way better than the Pyramid blu-rays - no doubt about that! However, it isn't up to the picture quality that we have gotten used to with the Ayngaran blu-rays. DNR seems to have been liberally used in the restoration process. In spite of that, I do think that this is the best product that you are going to see for this movie, without question. The HD stereo audio was actually pretty darn good and reflective of the source, in my opinion. Remember, the first Tamil movie to use Dolby was Kuruthipunal (October 1995) and the first to use DTS was Karuppu Roja (April 1996). A MUST-BUY for Rajini fans and Collectors, but the average Joe on the street can give it a pass.

Is the Japanese blu-ray the same cut as the Ayngaran DVD? My relatives who have seen this film countless times (in theater + sun TV reruns) say that there are a couple of added scenes in the Ayngaran version (or subtracted from sun TV).

Also, how is the picture compared to the DVDs available? The Ayngaran one is a really good mastering with clean colors and minimum artifacts, however you can see the digital resolutional limits.

Any comparisons to other companies' DVDs of this film?

I have no idea about the DVD version or the TV version, having never watched both. If you tell me which scenes specifically, I can look at the blu-ray and tell you if those scenes are present in the blu-ray or not..

Ok. One scene for example is at the end of the movie. Because of love failure, Senthil turns into a SwamiJi. There is a short 1 minute comedy scene after Muthu comes dressed as his father. It is just a few minutes before the credits in the Ayngaran DVD edition.

Yes, I can confirm that this scene is present in the Muthu blu-ray between time-stamps 2 hours 42 minutes 20 seconds and 2 hours 42 minutes 53 seconds ( 33 seconds )

This option from amazon (japan) comes to $30.27 or INR 1963 (with International shipping to India). I was lucky as my friend is in Japan and he just got it for me locally and sent it to the US. Good luck!

Please help me with the steps to place the order with India Shipping, because it requires registration as my existing login id with (amazon.in) is not working with amazon.co.jp

Thanks

You've to create a new ID for Amazon JP, and the shipping cost is almost as high (or higher) as the product price when it comes to shipping to India...

The shipping from Japan to India is only approx. 7 USD, while the product price is approx. 23 USD - Not too bad if you REALLY want the blu-ray for your collection

Strange. I could see only the prohibitively expensive Priority shipping as an option whenever I tried. When it comes to buying Japanese BDs like the Chicago Atmos Digipak, CDJapan is the site to go IMHO.

Pony Canyon will release a new Blu-ray taken from a 4K master (and now with 5.1 Tamil audio) in Japan on April 3rd, 2019:

An Amazon.co.jp Exclusive variant also includes what I believe will be a 5"x 7" photo/print (or photos/prints) given that the Japanese size is 2L:

A website for the new remaster also contains trailers for it, such as this one:

Another, longer video with one of the songs, followed by the same trailer:

Remastering older movies for theatrical re-release in India, usually what does this entail? Oh yes:

1. Cropping / stretching from whatever original aspect ratio to 2.35:1
2. Using automated DVNR software to try and make the film look like it was shot on digital.
3. Manipulating color / contrast grading to 'pop' the colors, original grading and shadow detail be damned.
