It's a funny thing how that ended up in the film. The original cut didn't have as many fights, so the Reptile one was added after the film had been screened and scored. Apparently, the song's writer/producer Juno Reactor (Ben Watkins) had some connection to the composer, so the instrumental version got used and subsequently, Traci Lords got an award for it, despite her vocals not appearing in the version used in the film or on the soundtrack. Juno Reactor appeared on the Annihilation soundtrack.

Funny how the two best fight scenes in the movie were actually reshoots: Johnny Cage vs Scorpion & Liu Kang vs Reptile.

I guess test audiences thought it strayed too far from all the sequel bai- I mean "the story".

Who am I kidding? It probably wasn't tested, probably should have been though. Anywho back to MK 1995: I love it.

I was a huge fan of MK 1 through UMK3 from around 92-96 and spent thousands of hours in the arcades back then. My personal favorite is still MK2 since it isn't as clunky as the first game and does not rely as heavily on higher damage combos as the third game; it's a really balanced oldschool fighting game. So naturally I was super excited to see the movie when it came out. Always enjoyed it and am glad it's getting a uhd.

Huge disappointment then. Now would be the time with the new movie to release the original on uhd. Oh well.

Both fights were choreographed by Robin Shou too and boy can you tell the difference from the stodgy work of Pat Johnson for the rest of the movie.

Robin obviously learnt from his time in Hong Kong.

That's actually what happened. NL held a test screening with incomplete effects and the scores were good enough for NL to be like "Eh, it's good enough. Let's just release it." That's why the effects look shit. They're literally unfinished.

To be honest this doesn't look any better than CGI Reptile in the first movie and that one did have finished effects, right?

The Hell sequences from Spawn are worse than anything in MKA.

1997 was a rough year for CGI at New Line.

I never did arcades much but Mortal Kombat Trilogy on the N64 was the pinnacle for me I think, having everything you could want in one game. I also liked MK4, even though a lot of people aren't fans.

Such a shame we aren't getting the 95 version. The 2021 version is so aimless and pointless. Its like expecting to do a fatality and finding out they replaced them all with Friendships.

[Show spoiler]
That gif. looks overly sharpened. It looks better there than in the film, actually, due to that and the low resolution.

Keep in mind that MK:A had nearly twice the budget and two years worth of advancements in CGI. It would have looked better had the effects been finished.

Yeah, it's just a matter of overreaching and a lack of budget. To attempt that kind of sequence on a modest budget in 1997 was probably not the smartest move. That said, the Violator earlier in the film looks pretty great for 1997, especially when they cut back and forth between the CG character and animatronic.
