Watching to hopefully get a steam deck. Wife is watching on her rig too. Gonna be kinda fun. We have side by side desks now so we got a pizza, and maybe we'll get a steam deck or two as well.

have one on the way.
since i got rid of my gaming pc some years ago, i have a lot of catching up to do.

but yeah i'm really excited for the emulation possibilities, being able to play ffxiv in bed and all the pc exclusives (and replaying crpg classics).

Steam Deck is glorious. So much so that I've completely abandoned console gaming all together since. Only buy games I like on consoles in physical form, since PC is all digital. If anyone is looking for some great deals on games for your Steam Deck, there's good bundles at times from places like Humble Bundle and Fanatical.com .

Emulation is pretty great too. Even good enough to emulate Switch games. Although of course I'll only recommend you emulate games that aren't regularly available anymore.

I got a 1TB micro SD for games from Steam. Another 1TB one for emulation. A 2TB external SSD (which fits in a case) for more games that I can easily copy over to the micro SD card or internal storage. I also have a 5tb portable HDD that I have the over flow of games for. Got over 1,000 games now from Steam alone. Those damn bundles.

Only downside is no VR, we'll not very well anyway. It will technically run them, just slow AF. Kind of sucks. Would of been awesome to connect a Quest 2 wirelessly to it.

Desktop mode is nice, if frustrating at times. Other little nitpicks here and there, but nothing major. It is a Linux PC in your hands, so expect some PC like issues sometimes. Positives overall far out weigh the negatives. Now that Microsoft and Sony are starting to put better versions of their games on PC, no need for their consoles anymore.

Also the case that comes with Steam Deck kind of sucks. Good and sturdy but almost no storage space. I'd recommend this: https://jsaux.com/products/steam-deck-carrying-case , which is what I have. Works great. I would also get their dock too. Which they now have a newer version that you can load an SSD in for extra storage.

My only regrets are getting the 512gb model. It isn't bad, it's just a waste of money, as in the difference between the others. I pre-ordered it day one. They made it seem like the internal SSD was hard to replace and faster, but it's not much better than a micro SD card and not hard to replace. Screen is a waste to me. Rarely am I playing in bright lighting or direct sunlight. Also can't use a screen protector without ruining the anti glare abilities of the screen. Basically ending up with a screen that's like the cheaper models, throwing money away on what you pay extra for.

Hope that helps some Steam Deck n00bs. Overall it's amazing little system and helped suck me back into gaming as I was slowly moving away from it, compared to my hardcore gaming youth.

I think the 256gb is a good choice. Probably what I would of gone with looking back. A good middle ground. Not sure how tech savvy you are. Changing the SSD is about as easy as changing the ram or HDD/SSD out a laptop. SSDs for it are still pretty expensive. I'm waiting until 2TB ones are reasonable before making the effort. Unless you need everything you own in one place at all times, you can get an external SSD for like a hundred or less and easily fit it in that case I showed. Using a cheap adapter to convert to USB. If you don't have the dock handy. Then use desktop mode to copy things to and from it when needed. You can do it in game mode too, but you still have to go to desktop mode to mount the drives anyway first. If you got any questions or help with anything, let me know. I've got a lot of time with it and still learning new things. I pre-ordered mine day one, but took almost a year to get mine. Got it just in time before I lost internet for a couple months because of a move transition.

I'm happy with the 512, and after seeing a few while traveling the screen is a worthwhile improvement to me. Probably the only thing I would change is I'd like the option for an OLED display.

Yeah they blew it with the lack of OLED. Would of been nice for the 512GB model. Would've of felt more worth price wise vs what we have now. Doesn't look bad but I got used to the Switch OLED, so it feels like a step down to me.

Not entirely Steam Deck related, but there is a new Humble Bundle w/ 70+ games. Not all of them are Steam Deck certified, but many of them, including Gotham Knights, are totally playable on SD.

I have some flights tomorrow and I figured I would catch up on a few assignments, pretty sure I will just take the Steam Deck and chill in a lounge somewhere.

Valve is now holding the first sale ever for its handheld PC platform, the Steam Deck. Following its initial launch back at the end of February 2022, Valve is now celebrating its first anniversary of the popular device. And while this celebration has come about with a new update for the Steam Deck today, Valve is now also looking to bring more owners into the fold by discounting the platform by a considerable margin.

Available starting today and extending until March 23rd, Valve has now marked the Steam Deck down by 10%.

Maybe you’ve got a long trip coming up, or just enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing your high-powered handheld gaming PC will have enough juice when it matters most. To help you out, we’ve scouted out some games that won’t tank your Steam Deck’s battery, as well as general tips and tricks for maximizing your playtime no matter what you’re vibing with.

Valve estimates that Steam Deck playtime ranges from two to eight hours. Based on our experience with it, most AAA games tend to hover on the shorter end of that spectrum—with the most graphically intensive experiences sometimes even dipping below two hours.

I have a trip coming up, and for once I'm not driving. Might be time to get one of these. And it would even serve me well in the living room when I don't feel like playing on my laptop when I'm hanging out with the wife.

So from what I'm reading, the 256GB is the best value? I'm no stranger to swapping out internals and have done plenty of PC builds over the years.

I received the Steam Deck, and I'm a bit disappointed that I paid full price for an open-box product. If it were at least cleaned up and didn't have someone's grubby "white" fingerprints it wouldn't have been so bad. I've seen far better repackaged products from 3rd party sellers on Amazon.

I played Mad Max (streamed) for a bit tonight. It runs the game very well, considered I was streaming (although my PC is wired). But my big gripe so far is that when I plop down on the couch it's a little tough on the wrists to hold the unit up at an angle where the screen is clearly visible. Due to me being far-sided and have an astigmatism, I can't really hold it up close with my elbows resting on the couch and instead I have to extend it almost at arm's length and turn my wrists up slightly to clearly seen the screen.

But beyond that, so far it's a solid device. Screen looks great, controls/buttons are well placed, and it feels good in my hands (apart from what I mentioned above). However, the wrist angle thing might be a deal-breaker as it isn't a natural resting position.
