I finished the installation of the floating shelf today. I still need to fill in the nail holes, tweak the joint, and do touch up painting, but the major work is done at least.
Front view: [Show spoiler] Looking down the length on the top: [Show spoiler] A piece of advice for anyone thinking about getting popcorn ceilings: don't. While wielding various tools near the ceiling to install the shelf, I occasionally bumped something into the ceiling. Every point of contact is now a spot I need to paint; though fortunately the ceiling is the same color as the shelf, so I can just hit it when I touch up the shelf. |

Like the setup. When not watching movies, the room can double as a "play" room a la 50 shades of greys. Was that color red, if I'm not mistaken. If I'm ever in the area, I'll rent some girls, swing by, and help you break it in. I especially like your shelves. I've been running out of room for all the new releases. Mind if I ask what you used make them?

![]() The racks are made from common pine boards for the vertical side pieces and horizontal shelves (this was the cheapest material at the time, and probably still is today). The back piece is very thin plywood (less than 1/4" thickness), and the trim pieces are an unspecified type of hardwood. If you are going to build a custom rack (or hire someone else to), then you can go with cheap, solid material if you're going to paint it. If you prefer the look of stain, then you may want to spend more for higher quality wood. Sorry I was slow in responding, but the thread update notification got caught in my spam filter. |

I really like the color combination.....giving it serious thought to use the same colors in my HT once my house is built (maybe a shade or 2 darker red).

Yeah, the red walls aren't quite as dark as I would like either, though it's not a factor when viewing with the lights off (which is most of the time). If you are going to carpet and paint a room, get the carpet installed first if you can because it's a lot easier to get a custom paint color to match the carpet than vice versa. Some scheduling issues made it so we had the painters in before we were able to look for carpet, so the end result is good but not quite ideal for my taste.

I hired out some exterior work on the house, and seeing some of the scrap lumber from that job that was headed to the landfill, I decided to snag some material and do something I'd been thinking about for a while.
Here's how the area below the screen looked on Friday: ![]() I wanted to raise the speakers up a bit so all the drivers would be behind the acoustically transparent screen and get the top drivers more or less at ear height rather than a few inches lower. So I built these small pedestals: ![]() There was a long, thin rip that would make a good curtain rod, so I built four supports to hold the rod up: ![]() And here's the final result (though I may fiddle around with the curtains to adjust the drapery appearance): ![]() |

Not bad at all. Rather ingenious to use the extra lumber and stuff. Basically, you made speaker risers....hopefully you notice some improved audio to go with the new aesthetics.
