Is it me or are they obliquely referring to streaming there re: Warners? It's not like HDR10+ would make any difference to their "vast catalogue of over 75 4K HDR" titles as it exists today unless they can inject the metadata into the streaming version.

My guess is HDR10+ on disc for their new releases, and an upgrade to HDR10+ for all of their current streaming content (this can be done easily, it's what Amazon did) with the possibility that some of their current discs will be re-released in HDR10+ as a "special edition."

A format war within a format is not good. UHD BD has enough consumer confusion as is. More isn't a good thing. Best case scenario: this never comes to fruition OR the ability to master one disc with two dynamic HDR formats is added to the spec. The most likely case is that it slightly hurts the format and makes releases a gamble but hardly detriments UHD BD. The worst case scenario is that the two formats lead to such immense consumer confusion that it kills UHD BD and physical media as we know it. All of these are real possibilities, albeit some more than the other.

The more of this info that continues to trickle out, the more is seems like a good idea that I keep the TV I just bought as a $1000 stopgap solution for 2-3 years.
It is disappointing what a black hole next-gen TV tech has become. It feels like it's never a good time to 'buy now'. This feeling becomes exacerbated the more you read and learn. It's all good and fun if you're rich. But if you're an enthusiast on limited income, it's a disaster. |
