Default Blu-ray Disc test patterns (for paidgeek/SPHE)

At paidgeek's invitation, let's poll the members of Blu-ray.com on what features we'd like added to the update of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's calibration "Easter egg"

They really need to put some instruction on how to adjust HDTV according to the BD test patterns.

Default no easter egg, please!

As I said alread in paidgeeks insider thread, the most important thing is NOT to hide the patterns as easter eggs. My Sharp player is not able to play them using the number combination. Just put them in the menu.

I would like to see everything, and I selected other not as a test, but have a next button so we can have the time to adjust out TV instead of a timed cycle through.

I could live without the saturation, hue and sharpness stuff as any real HD Monitor will not let you adjust these for a HDMI source or even HD component.

I would add some type of grey scale pattern,.. split bars should be enough just for reference because most display types don't give you much control over that anyway.

Some overscan pattern like the one on the rat(somthing) Blu Ray disc would be nice.

The thing I would really like is a brighness pattern without high Average Picture Level but that's just becuase my older (CRT FP) display device needs that. Most people don't have a display like mine though so you can ignore this one.

Actually,. the easter egg is pretty good as it stands. It's got most of what the end user would want to do. Anyone wanting more could seek a calibration disc. I believe Digital Video Essentials is going to be on Blu Ray at some point.

I am for anything else they can add. The more, the better (with some instruction).

Does anyone know what the screen is at the end of the easter egg that goes from black to white? What are you looking for there?

I second that.

But everything should have instructions.

You know what? I'm getting DVE in March (or whenever it comes out on Blu.) It's likely that I won't need anything after that. I say, spend more time releasing good movies with great special features.

Many of these could be duplicated in combos (HDNet's comes to mind).

The first five and instructions are all that's really necessary, sort of like what disney has on their Ratatouille disc.

The rest are mostly just benchmark type tests that aren't very useful for actual calibration, like the deinterlacing test... there's nothing you can really do to change that, it would just be to see if your display/player is doing stuff right.

I agree with the first four (don't need sharpness pattern) plus instructions for an existing setup but wouldn't a color test pattern need to come with a filter? Anyone know how accurate they are?

Interesting to see that not as many people are interested in an inverse telecine test pattern as that would make a great test disc for when buying a new tv or are most tvs now comfortable with progressively sourced 60i content?
