Canada UH... Help Please, Simple Question (i Think)

ok so i have a MP4 File (on the PC or Laptop) i transfer it to my ps3 and my Onkyo reciever plays with Multichannel source, which i think is the same as HD Audio (sure sounds it). So then when i play the excact same file directly from my laptop it wont showme the multichannel option on the reciever.

WHY
Any Ideas?

multichannel is not necessarily HD audio, it means a "multichannel source" (i.e. dolby digital 5.1 is multichannel audio but not HD audio)has been introduced to the receiver as understood by the receiver. the HD audio part would mean the source has decoded the hd codec or supports LPCM.

if your receiver at home supports multichannel lpcm or multichannel analog (most onkyo's do) then it would state such as it determines that is what it's getting at the input you have the source connected to.

the other thing to remember is that your ps3 can stream the true multichannel source it decodes via hdmi. if your just using a 1/8 mini jack connector then it's most likely only going to give you (downmixed from multichannel to-two channel) stereo, unless your laptop has hdmi, supports multichannel output of multichannel medium (movies or music) and your receiver at work has hdmi and supports multichannel input.

you did not say what brand of receiver you had at work or how you have it connected to your laptop. this is information that would be helpful to getting the proper answer, unless i have already answered your question for you.

hope this helped, keep us posted.

Everything that comes from my PS3 over HDMI shows as Multi Channel on my Denon. I have not been able to get this turned off or changed at all.

Honestly, I don't really care since all I use my PS3 for anymore is gaming.

say hammie, how's it going? hope you and yours are doing fine. just like you said, my ps3 fat, always says multichannel on my pre-pro screen, however, i did a quick test and when i put in a red-book cd the display on the pre-pro switched to "all channels stereo" i pushed the "display" button on my pre-pro and it said, "2 channel pcm in & 7 channel out, all channels stereo" once i turned the cd off, the pre-pro display went back to multichannel and i pushed the "display" button on the remote and it said 7 channel in, 7 channel out, multichannel LPCM.

next time you run your ps3, try putting a music cd in a press the "display" button on your dennon remote and see what your osd says about the source and what it's putting out, i'm curious.

i think the op's issue is that he either doesn't actually have either an actual multichannel source or how he has his laptop connected to his receiver it's not capabable of streaming (or decoding or both) that multichannel source to the receiver or his receiver at work doesn't support multichannel in. wow, i got that out in one breath!

give me a hollar after you done some science mr. wizard and let me know your findings!

You will want to bitstream the audio over the HDMI to your receiver since I doubt that your laptop has the processors to transcode the audio.

Your laptop doesn't have the right decoders so you probably will not be able to decode the surround sound on board. You will probably need to go into the sound settings and make sure audio points to the HDMI port.

I have one laptop with an HDMI port, but I have never tried pushing audio out it.

Just keep using the PS3, you aren't gaining anything by streaming direct from your laptop.

If you wanted to go hardcore from a laptop you could purchase a USB DAC from Jolida (about 100.00), run your laptop through that via USB, run analog cables out from the DAC into one of your Aux taps then apply processing to it. Will it sound any better... who knows.
