Default United Warns Comic Con Travelers, TSA Now Searching Comic Books

Just heard about this over on Techdirt but it seems that the TSA has lost its mind once again. They are reporting that an attendee at Comic Con has tweeted a picture that states all books will now be searched and that Comic Con attendees must remove any books from their carry-on luggage. That comic books cannot be stored in checked luggage either.

This is about the most insane move I have ever heard the TSA of taking. I'm curious about what other attendees to the convention has experienced over this? What is the TSA afraid of? Exploding comic books? That only happens with cell phone batteries.

Talk about jumping the gun. Apparently, United Airlines jumped the gun and panicked airline passengers. Arstechnica is now reporting that the TSA was misunderstood by United.

Quote:
Lorie Dankers, a TSA spokeswoman, told Ars on Monday morning that she was mystified as to how United could get this policy wrong. “I don’t know how United went ahead and stated a TSA policy incorrectly,” she said. “I can say that TSA has advised in the past that if people bring several of the same type of item, it can alarm the checked baggage screening, but there is no prohibition on bringing things that are not a security threat. In this case, comic books are not a security threat and we encourage travelers to bring them if they so choose.”

Kudos on United Airlines for scamming the general public. lols

Wait, in this case? So in other cases comic books are a security threat?

Other than that - possibly a first for TSA - the use of common sense.

You may find this amusing, on a flight back form Japan I had my carry on as nothing but maybe 30-35 pocket size books, my Mac Mini, and a tin of yen coins (since books are heavier, I put them in there to save the weight of the checked bags). The agent at the gate dug through that thing like I had plastic explosives or something in it. She even opened the coins and inspected them too. Maybe she was offended that I put all the ones with holes in them on a string.

No, but I did see him kill 3 men in a bar, with a pencil. I think it was a #2 pencil.
