Offical Neon Genesis Evangelion Info/Update Thread

Got my standard copy at Walmart for 44$ (Sunrise wants 65$ ). Probably gonna use it to store the Classic discs later down the road, but gonna head home later and check a few things. (Subtitle legibility and tweaks, audio mix).

It's too bad I'm gonna have to wait so long for the UE, the thing I'm most curious about is if the manga dub for EoE still has the atrocious added splat sound effects. Never forgiving Amanda Winn-Lee for that shit.

Just got my standard edition copy in. Overall nice artwork but watch out, Amazon put a white sticker over the front of my slipcover. I had to carefully peal it off and use some goo gone to get all of it off.

I popped in a couple of the discs for quick spot checks. They are using the slightly revised subs Netflix updated later after they premiered. (Aka the better Kaworu translation in episode 24. Not sure yet if they did anymore additional tinkering for this home release. Will post here if I find anything.)

The episodes look pretty darn amazing in HD. The old Platinum release had issues with aliasing, ringing and sharpening. None of that appears present in this new release. Looks really nice so far. No obvious issues in the areas I spot checked. (The old pre-platinum releases especially had some serious macroblocking in some high motion areas back in the day.)

Curious if this is the first Gkids release with no art on the bottom of the spine. This gonna be common for their series releases, or just an odd choice for NGE?

So, I got a bit suspicious looking over my just rcv'd Stnd ed from Amazon.ca, since the plastic wrap on the amaray had that soft Glad-Wrap feel to it, vice the crinkly harder plastic shrink wrap.
Sure enough, upon opening;

- fingerprints all over the discs
- scratches on two of the discs, and the kicker,
- x2 of disc #4 but no disc #3!

I could spit nails right now.

Sent in a replacement request to Amazon.ca immediately and described the multiple issues.
Fortunately, no grief from them and received notice a replacement is on the way and they sent me a Return Label to print off and return the defective copy.

Of course, my Printer decided, 'nah, gonna mess with yer head fer a bit first, ya fool' but finally got the label printed off.

I will await the receipt of my new copy before they get this one back though.

If your wrap is ever suspect on arrivals folks, check inside immediately, this ain't their 1st offence by a long shot but couldn't believe it would happen on 1st day of bloody release!

It uses Rei I, just like the Netflix version.

You've never owned it? I understand. It's been oop for a long time. Have you seen the series? I bought this set for several reasons, for one it's blu-ray, and two because it comes with the movie which I'd never seen.

No subtitles for any of the animatics or the deleted live action scene. Not huge but still a bummer.

The making of does have subtitles however.
Anno really likes filming close ups of the actresses butts. Not surprising

It really bothers me that the title isn't centered on the spine. At least throw an image under it or something.

Got my standard copy from amz.ca today. Case was wrecked along the spine and there was a loose disc. Had to request a replacement. Slip was in pristine condition, so I’m going to say this was a manufacturing fudge up.

One thing of note; they had a barcode sticker over the slip backside cut-out hole that prevented easy removal of the slip until it was taken off, so if they do that to all their copies, good chance the slips will continue but this is of course, just a guess.

They usually do that, put white barcode sticker on, if they are shipping a third party sellers product. Might explain the suspicious product you got.

My copy had the sticker on the slip too. Shipped and sold by Amazon. As you said, I thought only third party items arrived with stickers like that.

Weird. I bought a copy at my local Best Buy and they didn't have it.

I conducted a BDInfo scan of Disc 5 of the GKIDS Blu-ray set.

Note that the four audio tracks are Japanese 2.0 / 5.1 and English 2.0 / 5.1 (all 24-bit DTS-HD MA). Also, the 4+ minute long instrumental "intermission" between Death and EoE has been cut out and a 5+ minute silent English credit roll has been appended to the end.
