Even if the original song happened to make it to public domain, Utada's or Hayashibara's cover version wouldn't be, so those rights for use would still be in contention and of great value to the artist/her publishing company.

Constitutionally speaking, any enumerated number of years would pass muster regardless of how many. To wit:

Hey just to be clear about the Japanese sets, the standard edition is the exact same discs as the original just different packaging and a smaller book right? It's only the singles that are missing the movies and extras.

Artistic integrity has and always will be marred by external factors; this one just happens to be monetary.
What happened to Episode 16?

Would love to get it... but there's no way I could pay $275 for 26 episodes. I'll see what any possible future versions are first lol

Is it so high due to the redub?

The 2019 "Standard Edition" box set (catalog #KIXA-870) contains the same 10 discs as the original 2015 set. As for the Standard Edition's booklet, it's really really sparse and mostly contains credits for each of the 26 episodes. The only artwork it features is identical to the eight "Standard Edition" BD/DVD singles, of which 7 of 8 were also used by the ADV Films "Platinum Edition" DVD singles' cover art.

Just like releasing a home video edition of a 25-year old show?

In all practical purposes, yes.

Ironically, "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" wouldn't have happened if Anno had gotten his way and used "Polovtsian Dances" instead. It was executive-directed artistic marring that blessed us with one of the best openings of all time.

No, but I think it’s safe to say that it won’t be. Although they would’ve had to go in and remove the song from the mix when it appears in the background during the scene of Misato and Kaji.

Well that's a bummer, one of my favorite episodes, does the HD masters help the quality any?

You have to deal with Region B discs though, which not everybody is a fan of.

Curiously, why mention it can't be played on Japanese blu-ray players when both Japan and America share the same region? I remember this was mentioned in Weathering with You, was there extra security input for these discs.

So its confirmed on their twitter, only the DC episodes of 21-24 are included, that's upsetting, def keeping the platinum set.

I got my preorder in immediately but I'm gonna see what the other editions look like before committing to it. I'm glad both dubs will be included. The Netflix dub is way more important to me than the ending song.

Well, for a moment I was very tempted to get this but thank goodness, no shipping to Mexico. That helped prevent an impulse purchase.

Love the oversized artwork with the laserdisc concept.

Don't care about the ADV dub (or any other dub for that matter) so those discs are just dead weight to me and it bothers me to think that obtaining those rights inflated the cost of the whole thing.

Looks like the extras are the same from the japanese edition so I'm very pleased with that.

The paperweight and the card are uninspired extras that do nothing for me and just add up to the cost.

The book is probably going to be a nice bonus for those that don't have any of the artbooks but for those of us who do it's probably going to add nothing.

So, for me the perfect edition would be one that has the laserdisc box and artcards along with the official release and bonus material. No bonus dub discs, book nor trinkets. Does that sound like a Limited Edition to you? Realistically, a LE will probably not be oversized and still include the adv dub so I might actually end up waiting for the standard edition to avoid overpaying for stuff that I don't want.
