Finished this series and the movie. What an experience! End of Evangelion was absolutely insane.

![]() ![]() [Show spoiler] Also noticed, for any AUS customers, the Madman listing for the CE displays 10 discs in the product specs instead of 11. I wanted to cancel my UK UE order because I never really wanted a set that chunky but I'm very concerned that Madman hasn't made an error and are giving us the CE with a disc missing. Sent them an email but not sure when they'll respond. |

A quick review of the standard set I typed up:
Just finished rewatching the series and Death/EOE. As I mentioned in one of my last posts, this release is using the updated and revised Netflix sub that was uploaded a few months after the initial launch on that streaming platform. No typos or further revisions that I caught. The work was directly overseen by Khara and done by longtime Khara translator/interpreter Dan Kanemitsu. (Someone Anno has personally requested as interpreter for English events he has been to.)The new dub is more accurate in every way, both in terms of fidelity to the original (as in, Japanese) script and fidelity to the original character performances. Overall this new sub translation is far superior to the old ADV attempt and especially the disaster that was Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion from Manga Entertainment. (And I say this as someone who watched both back in the day and still has nostalgia for it.) It has been rather interesting going back and finding out just how complicated the original ADV dub/sub was. (And frankly some of the Matt Greenfield and AWL comments are really rather damning. Especially the bits where AWL has been caught in open lies and Greenfield directly admitting to flaunting orders from Japan.) Major props to EvaGeeks for documenting everything. I highly encourage people to give their archives a reading for more information. (I don't feel I really need to speak to how the original EOE was basically bad parody fandub quality in parts. Along with the massive translation mistakes between Shinji and Misato in a key scene.) Tldr: The old translation was a product of its time and many issues it created over the years eventually boiled over into the disasterous 3.0 dub premiere. Which directly led to Funimation losing the license and Khara having to come in and put their foot down in future translation efforts. Video wise, the set is a wonderful experience. The old platinum release had serious issues with haloing, ringing and macroblocking in a few areas. None of this is present now. There is some light DNR in places, but nothing too egregious. Death and EOE are especially standouts. Both of Manga's old DVD's were frankly incompatently done with major issues like terrible encodes and incorrect black levels. (Note: This is not entirely Manga's fault. The release was sourced from a pre-renewal, likely early laserdisc source.) This has been a wonderful release. Highly recommended for fans of the show and of cell animation. It's a true classic. P.S. And while the price tag for the CE and UE are high, props to Japan for realizing people would be nostalgic for the classic dubs and including them. While they don't quite fully stand up to modern translation standards, they are part of the shows history. Including them is important for archival. Just read that the Hong Kong box set doesn't have Fly Me to the Moon. Not surprising but good to have confirmation.

Has anyone here read the Eva manga? Is it worthwhile as a separate experience from the show (as in, does the story take enough different paths to feel like more than just a written version of the show)? Considering grabbing the 3 in 1 volumes but would appreciate any thoughts folks here have before investing.
