Of course I am! It had serious grain management. It may not be a bad presentation altogether, but it had massive DNR. HDR was good though.

Not always. There are some good Disney Animation presentations on BD. Some with grain.

People don’t like grain. I can understand that, but if people realise grain=detail, then more people would be against DNR. I’m talking about the general public, not videophiles like us.

Little Mermaid is mild DNR. You can see grain on the disc. It's been managed but it's there.

Time to add this:

2008 JP BD:
[Show spoiler]

2019 UHD:
[Show spoiler]

Same restoration team as Space Adventure Cobra, so this is "DNR from Hell"

Oblivion is DNR-ed to death or scrubbed off medium and high frequency details. The BD has a more organic look just like King Kong 2005 and Serenity. You don't need Geoff Vision to spot this.

The DNR on T2 made me sad when I saw it in 3D. It's the first thing my friend and I noticed. I'm having the 3D version sent from Europe, so I'm curious to see how it plays on TV. I'm not against doing my own grain pass on it. Don't judge me.

Light DNR

Source

(The first set of screencaps are from the 2008 BD, then the remastered BD, and finally some badly tone-mapped UHD shots)

It's a pity this list isn't a little more nuanced than just light/medium/heavy/tragic. I see Source Code is in there under 'moderate' but that does the UHD a huge disservice. Yes, it's got some very funky moments but overall it's lovely and filmic.

Isn't that the problem with lists though? They're always going to be a bit more subjectiveness in there than objectiveness.

Perhaps some sort of “blanket”/“intermittent” qualifiers would be useful

What a strangely sensible post. Okay, what have you done with the real fighthefutureofhd?

A list doesn't have to be subjective. You can do a list of totally objective things, like "UHD's from true 4K pipeline", or "UHD's that come bundled with newly remastered in 4K blu-ray".

Problem with this one is the given categories are themselves subjective. It's a good idea to list out the "bad" UHD's with overly heavy handed DNR, the nightmare releases that many might even consider worse than the previous blu-rays. Not sure how you separate "light" from "moderate" objectively, and I think a whole lot more (or practically all) UHD's and blu-rays have at least some low level of digital tampering/DNR applied - so by that standard almost everything should be "light" DNR. It's just that if it's artfully applied, it won't be as obvious (i.e. you won't have ugly frozen/manipulated grain, or start losing details).

Indeed. Winter Soldier has blanket "light" DNR while something like Batman Begins has intermittent "heavy" DNR.
