Re artwork, it will have the new logo - again, confirmed by Steve Roberts

The Tom Baker Years VHS, the Genesis omnibus edition, optional new FX for Revenge, and of course the new Tom interview - very appealing

You mean the recently revealed series 11 logo? I like it, certainly more than the Moffat era logo. Still got major concerns about series 11 though (Jodie as the Doctor not being one), but that's a discussion for elsewhere.

Frankly I'm more worried about the packaging being over elaborate and if I purchase this edition (6 discs bodes well price wise) it looking too big or unsightly when filed between my season 11 and 13 DVDs. First World problems etc.

I don't mind something special for packaging, a long as the discs are stored correctly and safely on standard hubs. What I hate is when they use cardboard sleeves that scuff the discs (like the atrocious packaging for the Lost in Space release, or the old Friday the 13th tin) or fancy new ways to hold the discs that just result in scuffed discs (like my Stranger Things s1 set that came in a VHS-style case, which A) doesn't fit on any of my shelves due to the height being a bit too high) and B) used horrific foam hubs that resulted in most of the discs being scuffed and scratched right out of the case, due to the way the discs are held in place).

Keep it attractive but simple. And please, no photoshopped floating heads/comic/mondo art.

Damn you BBC. When word of this set first surfaced I was determined not to buy it. After the barebones Enemy and Web DVDs, cheap ass Underwater Menace and the pointless and deeply flawed Movie blu-ray I was sure they'd screw it up. Now with the addition of 5.1 sound we appear to have a contender for the best Classic Who release ever.

That said I'm still waiting for reviews, and perhaps a price drop and/or standard edition, before committing.

Once they said that all the extras from the DVDs were being ported over AND a whole bunch of new extras on top of that, well - my will is only so strong. Then you add in the shelf space footprint reduction and I'm a day-one buyer.

Blech. Phooey. Nothing will ever beat the Diamond Logo or the Neon Logo in my mind. Nothing.

Diamond logo forever. But for various design and commercial reasons they were never going to use that on the main artwork where they?

They saw me coming, apparently. Like many US fans in my generation, season 12 was my first exposure to the series in the 70s, and it's the one I go back to over and over again. The entire Hinchclffe/Holmes era defined my basis for comparison of what I've always felt Who can be at its best. I'll absolutely fork over whatever they want if this comes to the States, and H&H's other two seasons as well...

I always presumed that during the one new release (+occasional New Who) a month era the licensing rights for DVD editions of the Tom Baker Years and Colin Baker Years documentaries would have taken too much time and effort to make them financially worthwhile either as standalone releases or bonus material.

The fact that here one of them is as a bonus feature is probably indicative of a changing and shrinking physical market. I hope the Colin Baker Years gets a release at some point.

I think JNT finally got the boot by BBC Video at the time from steering the VHS releases as he seemed to be very self serving and making sure there were lots of titles like the "Years" releases when the fans wanted full stories (which he didn't get paid to produce).
But The Tom Baker Years was a very novel idea.
I can't remember the contents of the Colin Baker Years but even though I stopped watching in 1977 I did purchase TCBY because IIRC it was quite an interesting tape with all sorts of odd bits and pieces on

Hopefully we'll get a date for an Aus release for this soon, they usually follow quickly enough.

The Colin Baker Years is the same idea as the Tom Baker Years but by necessity about 60% shorter. Basically, for those who've never seen the VHS releases, after a short introduction Colin watches and then comments on clips from his stories. That's it. Doesn't sound much but he's a articulate, charming and candid commentator (IMO more so than any other Doctor) without Tom's memory lapses or the cynicism prevalent on Davison's later DVD commentaries.

I always think it a shame Davison and McCoy never got to do their own volumes, and that Pertwee's contributions to his own tape amounted to no more than a few brief spoken episode introductions. But what can you do...

I don't know about others, but I can't believe this is only £49.99. I was prepared to pay a lot more, especially for native 1080/50i upscales. Even the packaging looks great, logo aside.

Seems to be some confusion here.

When I look at the listing it says £39.99 but when I added it to my wish list it leaps to £49.99 and mentions Limited Edition packaging .

If they have included all the extras and the Tom Baker Years that will definitely save me shelf space. Does that include special editions ?

Definitely buying, either way.

I was debating whether or not to get this last night, especially since I finally finished collecting all the DVDs late last year.

But, it would be nice to clear up space and reduce the weight on my sagging shelf. Buying this and recycling the DVDs would accomplish that, especially if the BBC plan on doing this for almost the entire classic series (can't be done with William Hartnell or Patrick Troughton as there's still 97 episodes missing)...
