It’s caused by the bottleneck in blockbuster releases last year. It should pick up in a couple of months when Avatar 2 hits and then we have more frequent blockbusters.

Oh, and they have always been luxury goods. Most people are content with shitty low bit streaming services (even better if they are free).

Always has been, the good part is titles on BD and UHD BD disc cost a fair amount less than LD did.

Look at the chart below for US viewing, disc viewing % is included in the Other. 20 years ago it was probably similar except no streaming, broadcast, cable and satellite would have made up most of the chart.

Millennial, Gen X and Baby Boomer fans of the long-running trivia game show got quite a shock when Gen Z contestant Audrey Satchivi confessed on air she enjoys collecting "obsolete" items like DVDs, CDs and records.
I think I've bought like 30 DVD's this past year alone. And from the updates here, while diminishing, it's clear many others are buying them as well. I mean granted, Optical Discs overall are pretty well aged. But I don't think we're quite at 'obsolete' yet.

People that place quality over quantity have always been in the minority and us in that minority is becoming even smaller.

So what do you guys think are you at that turning point where a Kaleidescape System is in the near future? Some of you respect Kris Deering's opinion and he feels this System has to be part of your Home Theater setup, especially if you have a High End Dedicated Projector System!

Kaleidescape is a very nice system, have watched in action several times. It is a closed proprietary system and as such I have no interest in owning one.

My Zappiti system (NAS and player) is much more open. It appears on my LAN just like my 2 Synology NAS drives do. Have a SSD in the Neo where I store all my concert content. It too is accessible via the LAN.

I haven't been following this thread. But it absolutely blows my mind DVDs make up around 2/3 of disc sales. These buyers just don't see or care about the difference on their 4K displays? Is it strictly about price for them? Or do they think they are watching 4K? I only mentioned 4K displays as they would have surely stuck with 1080p (or even SD displays) but 4K sets have been exclusively sold for a long time now. I realize some content (sports, older TV shows, etc.) is only available on DVD, but I would be surprised if this was the driving factor.

I have a pretty good front projection set-up and dedicated theater room, but K-Scape is well beyond my price range preference and what happens if it eventually fails or goes out of business? I prefer buying UHD BD as I have very good frame-by-frame dynamic tone mapping on my 4K JVC FP. The UHD image is excellent and always an improvement over the BD (unless it's a truly botched release). I also still buy higher quality Blu-rays that I believe will not see a UHD BD release, but I have been pleasantly surprised lately of the titles coming from the boutiques.

At some point if/when physical media is no longer made, I will transfer and protect my movie collection to a very large back-up drive. However, I'm confident that is a long time away.

#1: Yes it's price to them. It's ALWAYS been about price.

#2: Some content is only available on DVD - mostly TV shows. Here is an example:

Season Six of ‘SEAL Team’ Headed to DVD May 23

March 13, 2023

https://www.mediaplaynews.com/season...to-dvd-may-23/

#3: Less than 50% of USA Households have a 4K TV. The rest - mostly HDTVs.

Which Zappiti media player do you have and do you have the Zappiti NAS or are you using the Synology for the NAS? It seems similar to the defunct Popcorn Hour though it appears to have more functionality than the PH.

Have the Zappiti NAS with eight 14TB drives and the Zappiti Neo player with a 1TB SSD installed. AVS thread here.

The amount of DVD sales is amazing. Although I do still have over 1000 myself and buy a few occasionally. They upscale surprisingly well
