My X700 hasn't so much as stuttered once in several months, and I've been watching a high amount of triple-layer discs too. Guess I got one of the good ones, not that it's been 100% hassle-free, but those issues are solved now.

Its hit and miss for me. Top Gun Maverick locked up at the layer change, but Bullet Train was perfectly fine.

I just bought a Hisense 55" U6H and was considering the BDP-X700. Is the success rate greater if HDMI goes straight into TV. Maybe these issues are receiver related?

I jinxed myself, just had a minor stutter on Transformers Age of Extinction haha. Typical, that said I found a few bits of dust and some little smears on the disc after I removed it so that's probably what caused it.

The main reason that I have HDMI directly into the TV is to control and set the color separately for that particular input. It's a good reason for buying any Blu-ray or 4k/UHD player with separate outputs for Picture and Sound.

As to your question, maybe/maybe not/maybe sometimes/maybe never —
I don't know. Try it and see how it works for you.

Mine goes directly to the TV and I have the issue.

It's a just a blip in these machines unfortunately. A lot of BD-100's freeze on the layer change, usually the last 3rd of the film.

It's annoying but its not a huge hassle. When it happens, just hit stop and eject the disc and then close the tray and play it again. It's usually fine after that.

In the Blu ray hey days Sony players were among the best. I get that physical media has slowly been evolving into niche market but dang, if you sell a player then freakin' support it. Sony should have fixesd this freezing annoyance a long time ago.

Is this a player problem or combined with a format problem in general ?

Should there be some re-thinking how 4k/uhd discs are mastered or made ?

I don't know.

I'm back from my month long ban to say that this player is still a POS.

My oled tv goes blank when I put to Dolby vision on the sony x700. Only audio goes thru. But if I take out Dolby vision, image goes back on. Never had this problem until now. Has anyone had this problem before? If so, how do you fix it. Thx

Nah, they probably just need to implement some sort of buffering system so when the player detects a layer change, it acts to prevent disruption. Basically the same way car CD players and portable players in general work to prevent rampant skipping when in motion. Either that or optimize the memory allocation to prevent it getting clogged up, which seems to be the likely culprit for the issue.

Since it’s been out of warranty, for a few months now, sometimes it just won’t play a regular 1080p Blu-ray Disc. Pop it in my old Panasonic BD player and it’s perfectly fine. I’m regretting getting this because it was the least expensive option with DV. My Panasonic was acting weird a year ago October/November so I picked up the Sony on sale from Best Buy, even after reading some reviews about skipping and such, most reviews seemed positive so I went for it. …I opened the Panasonic again and took canned air to it again and let it sit…then I found the issue was with a USB I had left in it, (it was in there for literally years), so I pulled it out and haven’t had issues with it since. …so, now I regret not saving and getting a Panasonic UHD player. It will have to wait now, so, I hope the Sony isn’t going to get worse with the UHD discs, now I’m basically only using it for UHD disc playback.

I don't know.
The only issue I have with this player is the very brief "freeze" that sometimes happens at the layer change on some UHD discs; the last two UHD discs I watched (Dressed To Kill, Raiders Of The Lost Ark) did not freeze at any time.

It also sucks that you have to manually turn on/off DV, but since my projector doesn't support DV it's not an issue for me presently.

The issue with audio and visual has happened, but I cannot say if it specifically was caused by switching to DV. I usually just eject the disc, not even clean it, but just close the player, to almost reset the player. I usually take it as a handshake issue, which I guess could apply to the DV issue.

But with this player you never know what might happen, just hope it doesn't happen often.

Many people really like the Panasonic DP-UB820. Would there be a noticeable picture quality difference between these two players?

I recently got one of these without doing my homework and it's frozen on 3 of the 7 UHD movies I've watched all the way through. I'm going to try just getting some microfiber cloths to clean my discs before playing them, but I'm not optimistic considering what I've read.

I've just gotten my tax return and I have my annual performance review/bonus coming in a couple months, so getting an unlocked DP-UB820 wouldn't break me, but I'm going to at least try less drastic measures first.

I'll grant that getting the cheapest Sony player isn't exactly a diligent approach, but you'd think it'd at least be able to reliably play the discs!

Have you updated the firmware? Mine hasn't frozen since last fw.

I went into the settings and had it check for what it called a software update; it said it was already up to date. Is that not the same thing?
