So, based on further readings and comments from you guys, apparently my Denon's sound mode is defaulted to Dolby Atmos, and I must've changed it by accident at some point in the past. My x700 indeed can't encode or recognize Atmos on its own, until it sends the metadata via bitstream into the receiver; I assume the same goes for DTS:X, but I don't own a 4K disc that has that audio mix to confirm it.

I basically have to leave the AVR settings alone, whether I'm watching a disc with Atmos or TrueHD. The Denon CAN do True HD when the audio mix isn't in Atmos, but the AVR displays it as "True HD + Dolby Surround", and light research tells me that the +DS is there for the height channels, but I don't know whether or not it still means it's playing "true" TrueHD. Still have much to learn.

The location of the x700 is now on the opposite of AVR's location; it rest on top, while the AVR remains at the bottom in the separate row. I played a couple discs on the x700 in its new location, and so far, I haven't experienced the player freezing at random. I can't say this is conclusive, as it's too early into testing to know one way or another.

So, I have a Samsung JS8500 and unfortunately I do find that the HDR on its display is often not bright enough and a number of my UHD discs are fairly dim displayed on it. If this HDR optimizer is on the X700's settings, does it actually help brighten the image to not be so dim as before?

The conversion is only functional for output to an SDR display or with HDR disabled in the main settings menu, so if you're meaning the Samsung looks too dim on an HDR TV, the only solution for that is to turn up the brightness on the TV. Samsung had a tendency to half-arse the HDR on their players so you'll probably find the X-700 has better HDR contrast either way. If you're running the X-700 to an SDR TV, the optimizer is in the Options menu and it's adjustable, so just set it to whatever looks best on your TV. Low setting is more of an HDR-SDR conversion while turning it up is designed to mimic the effects of HDR in SDR, but can also cause dimness.

I probably should have clarified but the Samsung JS8500 is the TV which would be from 2015 while the player that I'm currently using is a Sony UBP-X800 that I got back in 2017.

My player now refuses to play Universal 4K discs and also won’t play Star Trek TNG past the first disc of Season 5.

Ah, gotcha. In that case the HDR enhancer on the X-700 won't help at all. Can you turn the brightness and contrast up any further on the TV? That's the only solution I can suggest.

The backlight and contrast are already at 100 when HDR content is played. Increasing the brightness from where it is isn't good because it just ends up making darks/blacks greyer with a more washed out appearance. Dynamic contrast brightens up the image overall but at the expense of highlight detail, etc. So I guess the only option would be to get a new TV at some point with a higher brightness capacity when it comes to HDR.

Damn, sounds like a no-win. Only other thing I can think of is turning down Black Level might help to compensate a bit?

Does anybody have experience with random failures to recognize a disc by this player? It can play them after multiple attempts to eject/reload.

My player is like this 80% of the time. I’ve had to start using my PS5 for a lot of discs as the X700 won’t play them or only recognises them as a Data-BD.

As of tonight, my UBP-X700 won't play discs, won't launch apps, won't pay anything from USB, and won't power down all the way unless I unplug it then reboot and do a factory reset. After doing all that, I was able to starting playing one CD to test it and then watch one Blu-Ray movie all the way through without error. However, once I tried to turn it off, everything just went back to being screwy. I had to do another factory reset in order to play anything again. I can't find any reason for this. The software is up-to-date based off of the information on Sony's website. I put in a Tweet to Sony Support.

I've said it before and i'll say it again, i must be one of the lucky ones with this player. I've had it now for almost 4 years and never had any issues with a DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K disc. Only minor issue i had was the player turned on by itself and all i had to do was change a setting and haven't had that issue since.

I was watching King Kong (1976) 4K BD and it didn't say Dolby Vision when pressing the display button of the remote when in menus. I think it did say DV before. It appear when I started the movie.

Studio Canal discs have some weird shit going on with their menus and loading screens that causes that. Nothing to do with the X700 specifically.

I've had mine for about two years. No problems either. My only minor complaint is that it doesn't do PAL conversion well for import DVDs. The playback is stuttery, or at least it was on my old Vizio 4K set. Fortunately, I barely ever watch DVDs on it. I hope I'm as lucky as you for another three years.

It seems Quick Start Mode was causing all my problems, which is strange because it's always been on as a default. No idea why it suddenly became a problem now. I turned it off and everything worked fine.

It should be able to output NTSC DVDs at 24fps, did you have 24p output set to Auto for DVD-Rom in the main settings?

I had my first issue with a Lionsgate disc yesterday (Catching Fire). It started stuttering about halfway through. It was a used disc but I've played a lot of other used discs without any problems. After taking it out of the player, I noticed some streaks on the disc and wiped them off. Hopefully the next time I play it there's no problems.

I don't think I checked, and it's been a while since I played a PAL DVD. I'll check the settings when I get home today, though.

Ah yep, it should be set to Off for PAL DVDs, otherwise it might try to force 24fps playback and that would also cause stuttering.
