Same. I would hope we'd eventually get the OAR in HD one day, but I would be happy with a widescreen remaster for now, if the conversion is done with the same care as The Wire.

Many people are just finding out about the horrible work done while trying to remaster the show, hopefully Amazon will change it for the proper SD version.

I would love that too, but consideribg this is Disney, it's highly unlikely.

Im personally hoping for an eventual OAR, since this show was not framed for widescreen. Hearing the commentary for The Body where they specifically discuss the framing of certain shots to looked like Buff is being closed in on doesn’t work in widescreen when there is plenty of open space on either side of her.

I’m still annoyed that they effed up the framing on Once More With Feeling which was framed for widescreen

I just watched that video posted above again and I’m angry again. Especially getting such good remasters of shows like Twin Peaks and Freaks and Geeks of all things (both shows I love btw) it’s just shameful that decent remasters of Buffy (and Angel) will ever see the light of day, let alone on a home video.

Both Freaks and Geeks and Twin Peaks had no CGI special effects that I am aware of so going back to the original film elements was a lot easier. Since Buffy had CGI special effects in every single episode, and the show was edited on video tape, putting Buffy on Blu-ray will be much more expensive per episode, and there are quite a few more episodes of Buffy and Angel than the other shows.

I am still hopeful!

Apparently there's a bootleg version of the 20th anniversary boxset going around, at least in the UK, except season 1 is the original version but seasons 2-7 is the remaster (on dvd!!).

I was informed by a fan on youtube, and then saw that comment on amazon uk: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/customer...SIN=B074G3V218

EDIT: Never mind, the guy on Youtube & Amazon was the same person and he was mistaken.

Given that Disney owns 20th Century Fox, I can't see a HD release of Buffy ever...a pity...I haven't seen the HD remaster that many fans are angry about, but the screenshots I've seen aren't that bad imho. It's better than nothing imho.

Not that bad? It’s a complete F U to the show.

It's worse than nothing. The inferior HD version has replaced the SD version on various digital platforms. If they hadn't released an HD version at all everyone would still have the superior SD version.

Thus why I'm glad I have the entire series on DVD. They can't take that away from me.

That's why physical media will always be superior to streaming.

I have the SD version on DVD - 2 sets actually...I guess for new fans, the HD streaming version might be bad - IF they had seen the original SD version. For many who are new to the show, if they see the HD streaming version first, I doubt many, nay, very few, will have issues with it. The people having issues with it are those long standing fans who watched the SD show on TV as it ran, or owns the DVD set.

That doesn't make it okay. It just means that people who are new to the show don't know any better.

Correct, but I look at it this way - if it was really, really, really, really BAD like many people make it out to be, then newcomers to the show would be angry with the HD streaming versions. And by all accounts, newcomers aren't.

People are overreacting.

I'm not saying the HD version is great, I'm not saying Fox should be ashamed of themselves. Both are indeed the case. However, to the average person, even newcomer, he HD version is good enough.

To draw in an analogy - how many of you are listening to remastered music that's been so BADLY dynamic ranged capped as to be horrid? And you probably don't even realise it. Even if you did, most of you would probably say "I can't hear a difference, who cares!".

In the 90s I watched tons of movies in 4:3 pan & scan and wasn't bothered by it at all. It wasn't until I watched the same movies in their original aspect ratio that I realized how much better they could look.

Most newcomers to Buffy will probably never watch the SD versions because they'll assume that the HD versions are better (like they are with most shows). They won't be bothered by the versions they watch but they'll also never know how much better they could look.

Sorry to disagree with the majority here, but I agree with dpastern. I have seasons 1 and 2 on DVD, and I just can't watch them on my 55 inch screen. The picture looks really awful, and the streaming SD version looked even worse. Not to mention that those are the only seasons that really look bad on HD due to the excessive DNR and the bad, or should I say nonexistent, color correction. Season 3 looks a little better but also needs some remastering but frankly I have no complaints after season 4. As for the widescreen debate, the only episode that caught my attention in terms of showing off screen personnel was the fight between Buffy and Faith on season 3, and even that mostly because I had seen a you tube video alerting to it. It's no doubt a proper remaster of the first 3 seasons is urgently needed mostly due to the DNR and color correction issues, but I really prefer the widescreen AR, even if it is Joss Whedon's choice. I really don't subscribe to the director/creator's choice being sacred mentality, sorry. Many fans of John Badham's had to suffer his almost black and white version of Dracula for years, and don't get me started on George Lucas. So in this particular case, for me, they should either add black bars or zoom in in the scenes where camera crews or unwanted objects appear, but leave the rest in widescreen. Again, this is my opinion. You don't have to agree with it, but please respect it.
