Disney better not drop the ball on a remastered release.
Disney drops the ball on most catalog titles that’s what they are known for sadly.

Unlikely, given that Joss Whedon is a sex pest, and a borderline pedo according to Michelle Trachtenberg's accusations.

Given they just killed the intended reboot, I doubt Disney has much interest in giving this an HD physical release.

Disney had 0 interest in it anyway because it's a TV show, and they've never really done much with their shows even with the DVD days, either not getting anything or only getting a couple random episodes they group together with a loose theme or releasing some and not all with a volume set... and even shows they know would sell well like Star Wars and Marvel don't get physical releases. It's a minor miracle they bothered with Chip n Dale and Tangled, those were extremely out of the ordinary for Disney.

And yet no charges have been laid. Innocent until proven guilty, or does the US justice system not work that way? Is he guilty? Probably. But everyone has the right to fair trial, without bias.

Now, back onto Buffy being released on physical format - very unlikely now. All the big companies have went fully digital. Another 5 years and there'll be no physical medium, it'll all be streaming. Movie companies make far more money that way - lock movies behind a paywall and reap $$$$. The answer is very simple - do NOT support the streaming companies. Boycott them.

Damn, that’s quite an unsupported take on the Trachtenberg situation.

She wasn’t allowed to be alone with him because (as a child) she couldn’t defend herself against his brutal takedowns that he inflicted on most of the cast.

There’s never been anyone saying it was for a sexual reason.

As each older tv show gets released on blu-ray (Dawson's Creek now), it is just unbelievable that a popular and critically acclaimed show like Buffy hasn't. I just don't get it.

I am certain that we would have seen Buffy get released on BD if the remaster wasn't met with so much (deserved) backlash. I guess I would prefer no BD release over a BD release with that terrible remaster...

Same, seeing that disaster put to disk would've been even more insulting.
It might take 10, 20 years, but I feel like a new remaster will happen eventually, Buffy is just too iconic not to have a proper one.

What I would want for now is for streaming services to make the original SD version available again, it's completely disappeared (except on Hulu) and that's tragic. I don't even allow myself to recommend the show to friends now because the streaming version looks too awful. Disney+ did offer a 4:3 option for The Simpsons so we know it can happen!

I don't think the backlash has anything to do with it not getting a proper remaster and Blu-ray release. Think it's more because, like has been confirmed, they chose The X-Files over Buffy all because The X-Files had a revival coming out. That seems to be the main incentive with a majority of these remasters and Blu-ray releases, like they need a reboot/revival for motivation.

Understand that Disney has very little interest in releasing to physical disc - it costs money for the transfer, is a OTP (One Time Purchase) and adds no value to their streaming service. They'd rather deliberately withhold the set coming to blu ray to boost streaming subscriptions . Government intervention is desperately needed in the industry imho to protect consumer rights.

This was a problem before Disney bought Fox.

Buffy came in #73 on Rolling Stones new 100 Greatest TV shows of all time.

Yes, I know. But, imho, it has only worsened since Disney started its streaming service.

Ever since the Wall•E Criterion edition was announced, I have been hoping that they'll start licensing out more titles, would love for Scream! Factory to get Buffy and Angel, but obviously, it's far from being a guarantee.

Which is such bullshit. Buffy is way better than many of the shows listed above it.

No thank you. A US only release sucks for the rest of the world. It's a hard pass from me.

Reviewers are full of faeces. That much is clearly obvious.

Time will tell. I am sure Disney will reconsider licensing at some point. The question is whether I will still be alive when they do!

I get that. I'm from Norway and it is annoying and, to be quite honest, a hassle, when I have to import, but honestly, I've gotten so used to having to import about 80% of my collection (at least it feels like it's that much) cause there's so much that doesn't get released here. Nowadays I'm just grateful if a title is released at all.
