Does people hanging around the many forums against various media mean anything significant? Usually i just see a lot of off-topic discussion most of the time, instead of actual discussion of content or media?

PS don't ignore the TV section as a forum section that isn't a lot of broadcast/streaming. TV series is one of the weaker mass retail physical media efforts i am disappointed with. You know they don't issue media in all countries for TV series and frequently locally all you got is DVD releases.

Could be you need to do a poll. This thread could be summed up in a few words and I suspect most posters know it. BD and UHD BD = best quality available for the enthusiast for the foreseeable future. For those that can afford or willing to spend there is Kaleidescape as an addition or replacement for disc.

Streaming works for many, myself included. Has many hardware/software warts that will most likely never be overcome because there is no governing body. If anyone is interested I can provide several links to AVS post on Apple, Roku, Nvidia and Amazon Fire TV hardware where all kinds of complaints are posted.

That is not to imply BD or UHD BD hardware is not without faults because it is not but it is the best we have available. If someone comes up with a higher density physical storage in the future maybe Zeus can convince the content owners to let us have at least 12 bit 4:2:2 content.

Enlighten us. How many women have come over and started talking about your discs with you?

I read thedigitalbits article about the DEG year end numbers and figured it would have been posted here. It's not looking good, but most of you in here will be on the titanic sinking when discs are bringing in under a million a year in the future

I would definitely be concerned if discs were bringing in under a million, but that's a drop of 99.9996% from 2020's total of 2.5 billion.

No one here is denying that physical media in general is in decline.

But a HUGE part of why 2020 sales were particularly bad is because of all the movies (especially big summer movies, which would have had physical disc releases in the fall/early winter) that have been pushed back indefinitely due to the pandemic.

It is disingenuous to look at last year's numbers and assume that it is 100% only due to decline in interest in physical media in general, and nothing to do with the lack of new content being available.

By that logic people must be REALLY be suddenly very uninterested in going to movie theaters or eating in restaurants based on how those businesses did in 2020.

I'm with you Flyry, but the people that prefer Discs don't see it that way. Even though we are in a Thread talking about Digital and Physical, they don't want us here. Both Digital and Physical come from the same DI, and IMO the Quality will match and surpass Physical. Here is the Digital Bits Article you were talking about:

Hence my statement that no one is denying the decline, itself. The point is just that the 2020 drop wouldn't have been nearly as bad if more of the movies planned for the year had actually been released.

But let's not let common and logic get in the way of your rhetoric. That'd just be silly.

Oh so it may have only been 21 or 22% and not 25.

Carry on...

Sounds more like you are having problems entertaining women?

Physical media is rapidly becoming the niche product in consumer digital home entertainment, compared to digital streaming.
I have never thought of any media except for LP's as mainstream. Even now they have seen a resurgence, just because having a nice setup and selecting music can be entertaining to others. its was always that way back when people used to play records at large parties.

Quote:
The new normal in the theatrical business is going to look very different than it did before 2020, but will probably not begun to fully reveal itself until mid-2022 (as more and more people are vaccinated against COVID and regain the condidence to do back into theaters, combined with the incentive of long-awaited theatrical titles finally arriving in those theaters).
Thats entirely linked to a wild guess of when most of the populace with be vaccinated. If the population feels more safe being entertained without their own morality at risk, then going out and being entertained might really take off. This stuck at home, and greatly increased streaming might only be temporary compared to our present routines.

The above trends are likely to continue and will probably accelerate in 2021 and beyond.
Bill Hunt can only guess where we are headed as he has no experience with being alive in 1918 and afterward with the roaring 20's. Certainly I don't either. But its just gloom and doom which he likes to bring up often.

Same old boring Physical V Digital arguments. Both are here to stay and will co-exist as long as the stakeholders are happy.

It’s not posted here because it’s a waste of time this year. Why do you and people like you (Lee) ignore the crucial point here? There are NO blockbusters! It’s like People who don’t like going abroad for their holidays declaring foreign holidays dead because people can’t fly.

It’s just bizarre that you use this crap for what is a very simple situation. No new releases=no big numbers for Blu-ray/UHD.

Then again, you know that. For someone like yourself who enjoys older movies, I thought you would be desperate for disc to hang around anyway. New movies are going to be the focus for all these streaming services. Heck, Peacock just wiped their vintage titles didn’t they? Keeping these older classics is already proving a burden as many on here said would be the case. Boutique labels releasing streaming services won’t work in the long term either. Too many services out there now sharing a ever decreasing space.

Well, even 21% is a big difference to 25% in money terms. Personally I think we will see great numbers next year when all these blockbusters are squeezed out. In the meantime, true HT enthusiasts are backing their passion with some great catalogue releases.
We are waiting with enthusiasm and we will be filling up on the feast, believe me.

It's impossible to ignore the elephant in the room Steedeel. But you continue your agenda of bringing it up any time you can. Boring!

No national chains left. Just local stores, Redbox and Netflix.
