Thanks.

I’m planning to use Apple Music for my daily drive only as I prefer CD for home use. This is truly only because in the very near future I have to change my car and the new car won’t have CD player.

When I bought a new car 2 years ago, it was depressing to see so few cars that still had a decent system with a CD player. I found a few brands still offering them though. Someone needs to invent a Bluetooth cd changer that can be mounted in a trunk which would integrate with the factory system. Changing out head units is not an option any longer since so many of your other controls and functions are part of the factory system, but there are still a number of us that have significant collections we want to enjoy.

In the late 80's, I was able to afford a Sony Discman portable CD Player.

That went into a cassette adapter which in turn went through a cassette to 8 track adapter for playback in my car.
[Show spoiler]

I remember my car was rough on optical discs. Trunk mounted changers did seem designed to deal with vibration better than dash units. These days I'm happy to use car play and keep the discs at safely at home.

Bluetooth audio can not do CD quality currently hopefully it improves in capability.

To some that doesn't much matter (we all know a few folks who think MP3 is good enough.)

In my car now I have wired CarPlay (and a wireless charger for a second phone) and prefer wired because I can play CD quality and even stereo high res audio through the car stereo while charging my phone, getting directions, traffic, local speed limit and I can get TXTs and calls hands free. I'm really warming up to CarPlay. Arrive Charged.

That is a lot of adapting. I grab 5 CDs at a time working my way through my collection alphabetically. I don’t play everything, but will grab whatever I am the mood for and some favorites when I switch the 5 out. They don’t stay in my car long.

Post-covid will effect consumers that were stuck inside are becoming more free to entertain themselves away from home, this will slow streaming gains likely for the rest of the year.

Even without Covid-19 it was bound to happen. Joe does not need 10 subscriptions to Disney+ (or any other subscription service) a long as the numbers are low there is room to grow and so early on it is easy to grow fast, but at some point you get to the point where everyone that wants one has it and there is no room to grow. The only variable is the "mover" (subscribe to X, watch content until most has been seen, quit X and subscribe to Y.....) where gains for one service is a loss for the other.

Like you said Covid probably pushed us there a bit sooner, and now it is plateauing but it will be interesting to see what happens in a year or so. Will the person that used to commute 2h for work that is now working from, that could not go to dine out, bar with friends, go to the cinema.... that was looking for more content to fill up all that extra free time at home decide "I don't have the time for all this and will rather use that money for something else"

My Chrysler van has CD, DVD and Blu-ray, all seldom used. Also has a 32GB HDD so all my CD's are stored there using MP3 VBR at 320 Kbps. The Nissan has a CD player but music is the same as the Chrysler except stored on a 32GB low profile USB drive. The Chrysler has factory 9 speaker JBL system, the Nissan has 7 speaker Bose system ( no other choice). All my vehicles were specked out by me and had to be ordered.

On the Chrysler system it is real easy to search and play a song, play by genre, artist, etc., not so much on the Nissan.

Found in the Android Apple Music App…

The Android app code also reveals that Apple Music will offer two choices for lossless playback:

Lossless
ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz

High-Res Lossless
ALAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz

I’m so excited if it’s true Apple Music plans high res and Atmos music.

I’ve been collecting high res music but I could instantly have access to so much more of it.
nice

I did this as well for my previous van which had a multi disc changer under the backseat and sedan with a factory console 6 disc changer. Also had Sirius satellite in both, current vehicles have Sirius but cancelled sometime back because of really bad sound from severe audio compression.

For Oppo owners that use Dolby Vision, you may want to read this post.

This tech writer doesn't hear the difference with lossless audio so concludes it's just snake oil.

What an *ouche. Anytime I see something like that, I want to hit them over the head with their sound bar they bought from Costco.

It is amazing that people can perceive smells differently from one another, have completely different eyesight, respond to touch differently, react to foods differently, but when it comes to hearing, we are all the same.

Just because his brain cannot process a difference, maybe 1 in a 1000 can according to him. Just admit that it doesn’t appeal to you, but don’t rain on the parade for everyone that can tell the difference saying that it is a waste and completely useless.

That's what I have been telling you guys, it's all Subjective Picture & Audio Quality. Very dependent on your equipment and setup, and how much you want to spend. $1000 setup can't compare to a $100,000+ System!

No. The video and audio qualities are NOT subjective. The PERCEPTION is.

exactly. Perception and caring is subjective quality is not, it is objective.
To go extreme, if someone is deaf then obviously he can't hear the difference between the audio being muted or not that does not mean that there is no difference and it does not mean he should not care about what others hear.

The fact that there are more and more lossless and/or hires audio streaming also means, regardless how little people care about quality, there are enough of us for the business model to flourish.

He will never understand the distinction between the existence of an objective measurable difference and the perception of that difference. A person may, or may not, care about that difference (the subjective part), but the difference still exists.

Essentially, if he doesn't care about something, then he thinks that no one else should, either. If something is good enough for him, then it should be good enough for all of us.

Not true, as others have noted. An example, for video compression there is PSNR (info here) where one can measure the results. From the example one can clearly see the difference between pictures with higher PSNR and those with lower PSNR.
