I'm very pleased that your results were good.

I am still awaiting results. My immediate problem is that I am fighting an infection and the medication to fight it does not play nice with my heart drugs. These damn drugs have so many interaction issues that it makes treating more than one problem a colossal clusterfark.

Geeze..I haven't checked in here in awhile..alot has happened.

I hope everyone who was sick is better...

I have to admit that I have no clue how much I spend on the various services. I know if I look too closely, I'd be canceling a few only to have to answer to a family member wondering why something was missing. I've even signed up for VPNs to get services not available up here.

I'm not a car guy, haven't been on vacation in a couple of years, and recently gave up on drinking (lost 37 pounds since Jan 1). I'm generally a pretty frugal guy but my Dadcave is my only major expenditure.

I was starting to fall into the camp that would argue about the closing gap between streaming and physical disc....

That was until last week when I upgraded my projector!

I was fortunate to snag a lower end JVC DILA unit from a guy who really took good care of his stuff. He'd recently put in a new bulb and had it calibrated. While I've only adjusted black level and contrast for my room, this guy's calibration has yielded some of the most accurate colour measurements I've seen on a display when viewed through my filters.

I'd been constantly tinkering with my old 4K DLP (OPTOMA) trying to get HDR material just right. I had been quite pleased with my results. Comparing my reference scenes over and over, I could, of course, pick out the differences between streamed and disc content.

The JVC's vaunted black levels are no joke. The largest difference is ever seen was between the 4K stream of Dune and the UHD. The JVC has widened the gap so much that I'm as blown away now by my discs as I am disappointed with my streamed content.

Congrats on your JVC, hope it gives many years of good service. My second front projector was a JVC (the first model with native 16 x 9 panels). Been following the ±'s of the new NZ series, in particular the NZ9. Sitting on the fence for now.

I watch in two different modes, for disc any aberrations in A/V are noted and checked out, for streaming always tell myself, “its just streaming.”

One thing I would like to know is why they handle digital so poorly. It's silly to have a digital copy redeem on hd on one site and 4k on another. It's also silly how they dont include digital copies at all for a ton of tv shows. Then we have the problem of how codes work differently on different sites and somtimes need to be entered on one site in order to redeem on another site. If I buy an anime for some reason it doesn't give me both language options. I expected most of these problems to be solved eventually years ago but digital has seen almost zero improvement since movies anywhere launched (movies anywhere was supposed to fix some problems but the new ones it created never got fixed so its almost worse then before movies anywhere launched). Then we have the drm which under normal use I should never see but I see it rather often.

I have tried to explain digital code redemption to people but its archaically done. we literally made a spread sheet because of just how archaic it is lol.

Streaming generally seems to run better with fewer issues then digital. Idk why but digital has stagnated over the last 5 years.

I'll be going back to the cinema to watch The Batman this Saturday in Dolby Cinema. The IMAX presentation was stellar but I gotta check it out in DC now.

I like redemption's made using QR codes. Just scan and a few clicks, all done if you have accounts at iTunes, Vudu, MA and others. Really dislike having to type in a long string for a code. Not sure why I bother as we hardly ever watch if we have the disc version.

UltraViolet was global, Movies Anywhere is US only.

Did not bother with that one. Best drama I saw last year was It’s A Sin on C4. Best BBC drama was Broadchurch from a few years back. I recommend it.

Do you get our all time great show ‘Only Fools And Horses’ over there?

So Redbox just came in clutch - I bought the Dune 4K disc for $5.99. I also rented House of Gucci and Raccoon City on BD. My expectations are tapered for the latter films - never did catch them in theaters.

Good deal on Dune 4K. Curious what you find with respect to condition. I am on the fence about Raccoon City 4K, but that one seems to be something we will see for $10 on Black Friday.

It plays fine. Never had an issue with used media from Redbox. I thought Raccoon City was trash, though. Horrible film.

I have had a JVC RS3100 (NZ8) for a little over a month. It has a laser dimming feature that is not good enough for some videophiles because of how it currently works. For me though, it's jaw dropping. Blacks that are black - from a projector. It's stunning.

Last time I saw this was with my CRT projectors and they had to crush a little bit to do it. I hope JVC improves this feature with firmware updates but for me it's good enough already. I have full fade to black that satisfies like you can't imagine. It's OLED type picture quality from a projector.

Just finished House of Gucci on BD and it was mediocre. Glad it was only a Redbox rental.

There was a time when ads where part of the reality of watching TV and people like me used that time as best we could (go to bathroom, go get munchies/drinks, flip to other channels and see what is playing. Then VCRs and especially multi tuner PVRs they became easy to skip. These days I only watch live news and Hockey, I don't have the patience for ads in anything else.

that being said My home is also more filled and sometimes the kids ask to let the ads run in part or in whole because they use that time to catch up on their phones.

Personally I would rather just pause when needed but I can understand people that have tight budgets trying to save a bit of cash by picking the option with ads and then using ad time for something else (like checking their phone. But I guess that would also depend on how many ads and how often.

It is easy for people to look at UHD, BD, HD DVD, DVD, VHS..... as different formats and not group them as "physical" .

And people tend to look as Digital as one format. It is not For a Vudu copy of a film Vudu has to have the machines running and place to store the copies, Vudu has to pay for the internet connection, Vudu has to pay and have the licensing agreement.....

If you think of them as all different formats or platforms or what ever you want to call it. It all starts making sense

Scored some more low priced media via the Redbox kiosk. Got Malignant on BD for $4.99 and No Time to Die 4K disc for $5.99.

Everyone has their own Budgets and Priorities, and I keep saying it's All Digital! Accessing this Content is the Key, from a Disc or straight from the Server. IMO we are headed for a Fiber Network to access Digital Content on these Servers!
