Filling in some more Star Trek gaps in my physical disc collection -- bought Lower Decks seasons 1 & 2 on Blu-ray. They should be here tomorrow.

I also have to double check my inventory to see if I have the Original Series on BD. I know I have it on HD-DVD, but that set has been long retired. I don't remember if I re-aquired the set on BD.

I'm mostly surprised it has only fallen that much. Even on here a website for collectors the demand for disney movies is way down. I know at least 3 reasons my entry point has gone down for disney movies.

disney plus- its kind of hard to feel a rush to buy anything when the disney catalog is already available to you.

lack of a vault- Disney stuff isn't going out of print and its price will trend downward more often then upward since disney plus launched. In the past you had a time crunch to buy some disney movies that just doesnt exist anymore and alot more people are noticing that.

lower quality films- Disney has put out a fair number of meh movies lately. They put out a few great tv series but those arent for sale. I don't think i have seen a Disney movie people can go buy in stores since like end game.

Only one title for us in 2022 from Disney:

Watched Thor: Love and Thunder last night, some good visual effects, so so sound track and a script written by what must have been a grade school student, it was ing bad.

Used to love Trek in the DS9 days. All the Dominion, Cardassian war stuff.

These 2 points go together. If Disney gets people hooked on Disney+ then even if people don't like their new movies they will keep subscribing month after month to access all their old favorites that they never bothered to buy (because they were available on Disney+).

In the long run subscriptions end up costing way more then buying titles individually and lead to a quantity over quality mentality.

Let's say there are 50 movies you want to own from the Disney brand. And lets say you paid $10 for each. That's $500.

At their new rate ($11) that 45 months of Disney Plus. Not only do you get the 50 movies you like, you also get the hundreds that exist today plus the next almost 4 years worth. Then you have the TV shows you can't buy. And maybe you will broaden your AV appetite and look at Nat Geo's offerrings.

So to wrap up, it's more expensive to buy the movies than it is to commit the same money to Disney+. And what about all the new movies that will come in that 45 month period? More cash outlay to own them. Included with your subscription.

45 months isn't particularly long. If I want to watch those 50 movies for the rest of my life I can do so with the Blu-rays without spending another cent. If I wanted to watch them with a subscription I would have to continue spending at least $11 per month for decades (and the price will most likely increase many times over those decades).

How many times are you going to watch your purchased movies? 3, 4, 5? Remember: the more movies you own, the less you watch each one. That's an undeniable fact.

And 4 years IS a long time. Decades? What aload of BS!

10 dollars each is pretty high with what disney has done to its physical market. going though my Disney purchases this year I bought 30 titles with an average cost working out to around 4.86 dollars each.

The main savings with disney plus is probably skipping theater showings.
They released around 10 big films this year. watching 8 of them would probably be more then breaking even compared to going to the theaters by yourself. with a family of 4 streaming 2 movies rather then going to the theaters would cover the cost of disney plus.

Ownership, ownership, ownership.

Disney hasn’t turned a profit yet (the year they do so is always just around the corner), it’s possible that the only way they can make a profit in a few years is to lease some of their content out).

With disc, the content is secure. I can watch what I want, when I want. Even now, Disney doesn’t have all their output available.

How many times do you need to be schooled abouty Disney+ making a profit? On December 10, 2020 the CFO showed a chart. On the chart was their expectation of when Disney+ would be profitable. And that date was by the end of 2024. As it is, there is a 99% chance it will happen by the end of 2023 - a year early.

FY = Full Year BTW

There are plenty of movies and TV shows that I have watched repeatedly for decades. I have no doubt that will continue. With discs I can watch every movie I buy as many times as I want for as long as I want without ever spending any more money.

If I was watching via subscriptions I would either need to subscribe to many subscriptions all the time (which would cost way more than what I spend on discs) or I would need to pick one or two subscriptions each month (which would drastically limit my choices). And regardless of which method I chose I'd have to spend another $50 per month to upgrade my internet service to be able to watch all that streaming content.

Streaming subscriptions would certainly not save me money.

Some great catalog title news at the Bits (here).

Some positive Disney disc news: The Abyss on UHD - Oh Yea

Another favorite of mine, Dragonslayer on UHD disc. Have it in HD via MA but the audio is almost mono. The DVD audio is a fairly good Dolby Surround. IIRC, the best audio for this title was on Beta Hi-Fi.

You think that Disney isn't releasing their Disney+ shows on disc because people would spend less on them then they will end up spending on Disney+ subscriptions. You also think that subscribing to Disney+ is a much cheaper option that buying Disney content on disc.

Those two statements are contradictory.

The more movies I own, or have access to, the less time there is to watch each one over again is true no matter how I buy, or access, movies.

Decades of use is BS, is it?

I own laserdiscs that are 30 years old.

I own DVDs that are 25 years-old.

I own blu-rays that are 15 years-old.

I can still watch them all. I will expire long before my discs will.

I could believe it. Because it's another Fox title that Disney didn't restore, that was finished before the purchase, available on streaming if I'm not mistaken. What would be impressive is if they actually paid for one of these restorations themselves. Not counting Avatar, which they made all that money with bringing it back to cinemas before the sequel.
