Not at all. If physical media ended with blu that would have been fine for me. Uncompressed sound alone made blu light years better than dvd. 4K adds elements which I find pleasing when applied well, but I have no difficulty watching blu when 4K is not available. Also, you must have the right gear to fully appreciate 4K. It's worth it, but there's nothing wrong with blu.

Considering I still watch movies on VHS when I have to, don’t even think about walking away from standard Blu. There are many cases where the best copies or the only copies are still on older formats. While there are many great movies on 4K that simply can’t be topped (2001: A Space Odyssey and The Ten Commandments instantly come to mind), other ones are just disasters on newer formats. Terminator 2: Judgment Day sucks on 4K, so I stick with my Blu. Heavy Metal, only on standard Blu so far. Freaks, Pink Floyd - The Wall, The Abyss, and True Lies are only on DVD, so I’m forced to stick with DVD. A boatload of movies were edited (Star Wars, The Exorcist), and many others never hit any digital format (Greed, Raintree County, the unedited versions of John Waters’ movies, Looking For Mr. Goodbar, Little Darlings), so there I’m forced to settle for whatever format I can find. Case in point, don’t walk away from any format. (On top of that, most good 4K players play DVDs and standard Blus perfectly, so you really have no reason to give those up.)

A bit complicated for me. I like 3D and there is no 4k 3d (so stuck with HD on that). There is also reality film >>DVD so BD was a natural evolution on the other hand a lot has been filmed in HD or that went through a HD DI for effects and compositions so for roughly 2 decades of films and TV there is not much to gain from 4k because the limit is in the source. I still prefer 4k but for both those reasons it is not as hard as SD->HD for me.

The reason why any physical media beats streaming is because at least you own your movie and at least you know more physical media will come. Buying the latest Blu or 4K means now they can release the next one. It’s about the principle of it.

I am assuming we are comparing apples to apples (I.e. 1080p BD to UHD BD in 4k or Streaming HD to streaming 4k) and not apples to oranges (BD to streaming 4k) then it is clear BD is much better and no way I am dropping it.

Now that we have UHD BD I have no problem continuing buying BD. I do find it irritating that many UHD BD's will have immersive audio (Atmos, DTS:X) and the BD will not. There is no UHD BD 3D so all my 3D is on BD. Then there is the problem of some older title audio remixes done for BD (and IPTV) where the sound is almost mono but was very good on DVD (and LaserDisc). Learned the hard way not to sell or donate my DVD's till I had checked them out on BD. Fortunately, this has not happened often. |

I can't hardly watch DVD anymore because of the quality or lack there of in comparison to Blu and 4K, but as far as eliminating all Blu for 4K, I would keep my Blu-rays. A lot of your 4K titles come with a Blu-ray copy that is often remastered. If a title you like which you own on Blu comes out in 4k then you can upgrade if it's one of your favorites.
Now for me, I have upgraded all available titles so I have 60% 4K 40% Blu in my collection and I just sell off my old Blu-rays or trade them but honestly a bunch of people I know are perfectly fine with their Blu-rays. (They all have admitted that the UHD copies look better though, so it's more a matter of personal tastes.) |

DVD is only better than HD Streaming in the sense that you can "own" a DVD, in terms of picture and audio quality (minus really rare exceptions where they provde a stereo PCM track), HD Streaming provides a higher quality viewing experience and not by a tiny margin on many sources.
As for the OP. Blu-Ray is the format that is good enough. Switching to 4K with HDR provides some differences in picture quality but depending on multiple factors it might not be as extreme or noticible as you would expect. I have a high end OLED setup and both are wonderful. The amount of "greatest movies of all time" released on 4K at this point is still pathetic, and many of those films will only see marginal upgrades even if they do make the switch as we have seen the 4K masters down sampled to Bluray for the release. DVDs are generally annoying to watch. |

I used to do some catalog titles DVD2HDX but stopped when the IPTV version was P&S and the DVD was OAR (i.e., 2.39). Vudu used to allow you to play the first 2 minutes of a title but that feature has been removed so I can no longer see the aspect.

As a committed front projection guy, I'll never have the hardware to fully appreciate HDR. For me the upgrade to 4K has been worth it in the opportunity it gives distributers to remaster a title.
The early days of Blu ray had many examples of upscaled DVD masters simply being shoveled onto the new format so people could feel good about their investment. With newer titles, I'm still more than pleased with a well mastered 1080p bluray upscaled to 4K by my projector. But when titles like THE SHINING and THE DEER HUNTER get remastered for 4K, I am very grateful. |
