9 times outta 10 fans create better looking designs than official companies.

The discs actually being in cases and not cardboard sleeves automatically makes it better. That said, I honestly think the white background on the spine artwork clashes too much with the black box.

Nearly anyone makes better DBZ packaging than FUNimation.

Well, they can and do take credit for this:

The Australian and UK age ratings? Bold move.
(the BBFC logos were stickers on the UK standard edition, so that's probably not accurate).

Seems like GKids/Shout Factory has been cranking out anime releases left and right and with their big announcement of Future Boy Conan and Neon Genesis Evangelion, what do you think are the odds of Shout Factory somehow working with both Funimation and Toei to release both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT on Blu-Ray? I know that probably won't happen, but man, I wish it would though. For that matter, I'd love to see Shout Factory grabs the home video rights to the Dragon Ball franchise from Funimation, or at least team up with each other.

FUNimation isn't letting go of the series or going to license it out, it's not going to happen unless Toei for some strange reason blocks FUNimation from renewing the rights. Toei also isn't that interested in releasing Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, nor Dragon Ball GT on Blu-ray, they have done nothing with any of them on home video since the Dragon Boxes and Dragon Box singles, they've been OOP for ages in Japan. If Toei works on Dragon Ball Blu-rays, they'll send the show to Q-TEC to turn them into oil paintings, they're not going to invest in properly remastering 508 episodes, especially given how expensive that would be.

Shout! Factory is simpy the distributor for GKIDS (note the influx of GKIDS re-releases like Patema Inverted, From Up on Poppy Hill, and A Letter to Momo which have switched from Cinedigm/New Video Group to Shout! Factory), they're not the ones pulling the strings on those projects.

Between an upscale/remaster by Q-TEC or Selecta Visión of Dragon Ball... I'd take Q-TEC.

Dragon Ball Kai for example looks "soft," but it's a HD Remaster of Z and the 35mm episodes really look spectacular so there are some redeeming qualities. Still, my biggest issue with Kai was the music change (I never got used to it though I tried to).

So I tried my own method of DNR to see if I can solve some of the issues introduced by the DNR in the 30th anniversary Blu-rays, namely the fact that the normally soft and diffuse character shading and clouds now have hard edges and jump around like animated scribbles.

The process I used does not interpolate (invent) information to try to cover up the grain. It takes clean pixels from previous and subsequent frames to replace the grain. So it always uses information from the source and remains faithful to the animation cels. Coincidentally, it also removes blemishes and compression artifacts.

Level Sets

A couple more examples:

[Experimental]Re-grain + additional post-processing

What do you think of the results? At some point I think they'll give in and send the original 16mm negatives to a serious restoration company in the US, like Lowry Digital (who recently restored the old Pokémon movies) and then we'll finally have a definitive HD version of DBZ with its original beautiful 16mm film grain.

Looks pretty good. I think one if the biggest issue with the 30th is that the backgrounds are in focus too much, and your experiment partially solves that issue.

Would be nice is funimation started releasing Super sets that had like episodes 1-24 instead of 1-12. It's been a long time.

Would also be nice if they started releasing all the OVA's and specials that never got american releases like,

Dragon Ball Z: Plan to Destroy the Saiyajin
Dragon Ball: Yo! The Return of Son-Goku and Friends!!
Dragon Ball Z: Atsumare! Goku's World, Dragon Ball Z OVA
Dragon Ball Z: Plan to Eradicate Super Saiyans OVA Remake
Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock
Super Dragon Ball Heroes

I know some of these are more likely than others, but one would imagine any chance funimation has to milk the franchise for more $ they would take it

There’s also Dragon Ball Z: Summer Vacation Special

Dragon Ball Z: Plan To Eradicate Super Saiyans can be watched on:

Episode Of Baldock is on

As for more Super episodes there was technically this

It's strange why those OVAs havent come out here. Real headscratchers, i cant imagine its that pricey to license them either if youve already got that relationship with Toei.

The part sets must still be selling well enough that Funimation doesn't feel the need to release larger sets.

I actually do have one of those games for plan to eradicate the saiyans. the game itself sucks tho lmao. What I want is for them to be on bluray. I don't want to mix my game collection with my anime collection. And I don't have a kinect haha. who did? it seems funimation is kind of dropping the ball here imo but they have no real incentive to do anything. not with those sonybucks

-edit
this situation reminds me of how funimation is handling the yu yu hakusho movies and OVA's as well. There is probably a fanbase for those but they wont release them. two new ova's and a movie that funi never did.

Should be noted Yu Yu Hakusho has had licensing issues before, which is why it took them so long to get the first movie and Eizou Hakusho. Wouldn't surprise me if a similar problem is affecting the second movie. Now as for the new OVA, who knows what the heck is going on with that.

Last year Chuck Huber said dubbing on the OVA was halted due to Covid. Nothing since. It's already been two years since Funi announced they acquired the OVA. I don't believe that they can't take a couple of days to dub a 30 minute OVA. It's a bit ridiculous at this point.

Didn't Funi lose the Full Metal Alchemist series, but I'm sure that was a unique situation.
