Thumbs up Obscure films found on Netflix steaming of never released on any home format.

I hope it's ok to start this thread in this category as I wasn't too sure where to place it and I also hope it's welcome with the Blu-Ray.com community.

Lately in the past few weeks I've been spotting a lot of films, that were never available before to any of the home video formats. These very obscure titles are on Netflix watch it now. I also have been finding a few that are in HD that have yet seen light on Blu-Ray. I tried doing Google searches for possible forums displaying links to these hidden gems, but Nada, So I hope this is welcome, if I could start this thread here posting any titles found for other Netflix users interested in these finds.
I will post new finds as soon as I find them, and hope some of you will too!

Note these titles are currently being streamed in SD unless noted:

While as a general rule I *hate* subtitled films (even the classics like "Seven Samurai" -- I just hate bouncing back and forth between the bottom of the screen and what's onscreen) I have to say the absolute funniest film I've seen in the last couple of years (even over major releases) is the very obscure "OSS 117: Cairo: Nest of Spies".

This film has a somewhat complicated context -- apparently there was a series (or at least attempt to be serious) "OSS 117" spy series in the days of such things, and so this is a spoof on that. I'm guessing that, like this, was strictly a French film thing (and unlikely to ever be available for us to see) but you don't have to have seen that (or even know it) to appreciate this one. Just think "James Bond spoof" done right and you have it.

And this is done right -- how very much more clever this one is than all the obvious "Get Smart"/"Austin Powers"/"Man From UNCLE" stuff we Americans made. There are a lot of subtle (and not so subtle) things going on here (I particularly like the way all the women eye OSS117 whenever he walks through anywhere -- I was watching "Dr. No" last night and this was *exactly* what happened with Sean Connery. Only in this case OSS117 isn't all that handsome, and it happens with even men eyeing him :>).

It's perfect in every regard -- OSS117 is the perfect male chauvinist and also perfectly ignorant (and by that I don't mean he's stupid, not Max Smart stupid, nor even clueless like Inspector Clouseau. No, he's just supremely uncaring by how little he understands the world, because in his arrogant way he believe he understands just as much as he needs to -- he is, after all, white, male and French, so what more could anyone want?).

There is a sequel (also available on Netflix) but it's not as good (worth watching, but doesn't catch the lightning in the bottle that is this first effort and they try too hard in exactly the way the "Powers" films go wrong). I like this film so much I'm going to try showing it to some of my friends who feel about foreign language films the way I do -- this may be the exception that proves the rule.

Remember when you watch this the time frame -- this is set squarely in the 60's (although unlike the Powers stuff they don't hit you over the head with that. Indeed, that's the great charm about this sly effort -- they do everything so effortlessly you are liable to miss half the humor unless you pay careful attention).

In HD

(for some reason I can't get a link to the movie to post here, so look it up on your own).

Used to watch " Tank " all the time growing up. Back when I was a C. Thomas Howell fan. This was a fun movie back in the day, Haven't watched it in years though.

This is one of the reasons why I like Netflix. I get to watch many unknown movies (especially foreign) that I would never rent or buy BDs of.

Lately in the past few weeks I've been spotting a lot of films, that were never available before to any of the home video formats.
Most of the Obscure ones seem to be coming from MGM's old back-catalog of Orion-acquired indies from struggling lil' mom-and-pop B-studios from the 60's and 70's, like Avco and Amer. Int'l., which already showed for years on their digital-cable ThisTV.

Although, bearing in mind Crack in the World and the two Danny Kaye movies, it's possible Olive Films may have joined in on the Streaming underground...
(And "Knock on Wood" and "On the Double" are plesant enough, but they're no Court Jester.)

I'll second that:
HD, HOW did you manage to post movie-specific Netflix links without the Forum software blocking them as "Cookieless"?

Otherwise, I'd mention "Money Talks", the second of the two little-known bigscreen Candid Camera movies from the 70's*, where Allen Funt thought he was doing Serious Social Essays On Modern Morality, and which has never even come out on VHS that I know of.
The essays on Nixon-era Commercialism are a bit long-winded and dated for their time...But for those who equate "Hidden camera" with Ashton Kutcher throwing selfish anger-management temper tantrums, it's surprising just how harmlessly positive most of the CC stunts could be, and still make funny behavioral-psychology points--It's worth renting just for one stunt in which a disguised Muhammad Ali refuses to pay for a delivery package: The deliveryman is understandably not pleased, until the disguise comes off, and....all of a sudden the complaints disappear.

---
*- (The first, "What Do You Say to a Naked Lady?" never had its rating marked down from a 70's X, and is unlikely to show up on Netflix, although it did show up on MGM's brief affair with YouTube. Eh, it was okay.)

Thanks, Eric, for reminding me about that Alan Funt movie (I'm old enough to have seen it in the theaters -- can't even imagine going to the movies for any kind of movie like that nowadays). I'll take another look at it today.

I used to love "Candid Camera" (again, dating myself for all you kids). There was one absolutely hilarious stunt where a guy was inside a postal drop and talked to someone posting a letter, only to shut up when the unsuspecting dupe called a policeman over to have him listen ("Hey, you'll never believe this, there's a guy in there. Hello? Guy? Say something!". Queue to policeman walking away rapidly from this New Yorker crazy). Hmmm, now I need to see if any of THOSE shows are available on Netflix.

There WAS a Rhino boxset available on hard-disk that covered Best Of's by decade, don't know if it's still in print.
(And yes, I've tried the "Everyone faces the same way in an elevator" stunt in real life, and it works. Funt loved to get Psychology 101 mileage out of that. )

And as mentioned on the other Netflix thread, I'm currently watching Seasons 3-5 of the old 80's Disney Channel "Wind in the Willows" that A&E never bothered to put on disk OR tape, after Seasons 1-2 generated "low sales".
(If your kids have never seen this, you may end up as hooked as us 80's cable-boomers were.)

I don't know. I am using Google Chrome as my browser? I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I didn't do anything special other then cut copy and paste.

You just need more practice. I watch anime all the time with the subtitles and you don't have to bounce back and forth at all. You just have to get used to it, which takes some time. After almost 500 episodes of one piece and a ton of naruto you get pretty good at it.
