What I don't understand is why bother redoing the effects if you're not going to do them right? Firefly worked just fine with upscaled effects, so I'll take it. But if they're just half-assing the new work, then it just doesn't make sense to me.
Although to be honest, I've only done one total viewing of the Buffy/Angel in the summer of 2010 and haven't watched it again since, so honestly, I'm sure I wouldn't even notice as sad as that is to say. I really want this in my collection ASAP though, but the way these companies seem to drag their feet on Blu Ray TV isn't all that inspiring. |

Because I'm sure you didn't have any issues with the widescreen presentation of S4-S7 before, bar the goofs - which are also noticeable in the first three seasons - ... but now it puts you off? I mean, were you bothered by the dead space~ and the way it was shot back then?

Now, when I say it put me off, I guess I meant that the very notion of tampering with somebody's work and thus changing a lot about it really rubbed me up the wrong way. Seeing Buffy cropped the way it has been reminded me of why you shouldn't change a fundamental feature of a presentation and that extends to season 4-7, despite not necessarily being 'bad' with it's opened up space. |

When do you think the Blu-Ray release could be programmed ? And the annoucement ?
I hope they do not expect the end of the series. I think we can hope something in a few months, for example in January for the press release. The third season will be completely broadcasted, and this is the last one for which Fox didn't have an opinion on the 16:9 aspect ratio. Last edited by Buffdale; 09-10-2014 at 09:51 PM. |

Also, the whole "true fan" rhetoric exhibited in this thread, calling people who enjoy the widescreen presentation 6packJoe (not you, I know) and whatnot, is not a good look either and sounds ridiculous from people who did not have such issues a few weeks ago. Just saying. |

All I know is I want a Complete Series Blu-ray set in 4:3 as intended, no DNR applied, with lossless audio, ported over extras, and a few cool new ones. It can be in a deluxe special packaging or standard Blu-ray cases per season in a gift set. Either way, and I will give them money. Please release this Fox! And also release Angel on Blu-ray too.
Wouldn't this be pleasing to most of you? Even those of you who wanted the widescreen version? |

For the aspect ratio, I'm a little more... "open minded". All I want is that there is no loss, and no goofs. I'm mostly concerned about the overall quality of the image. Brightness, contrast, the DNR, special effects... I hope we will have all the deleted scenes, and... why not a special gift set with an object ? I wonder if they will end the eighth season (and the ninth). This could be a bonus... But that's not my priority AT ALL. Perhaps the unaired pilot. I want Angel too ! |

I don't think any OAR purists like myself think that those that enjoy the widescreen presentation are not true fans of Buffy - the OAR issue has nothing really to do with just Buffy. I do however think that when it comes to OAR, there are many that either don't understand what OAR is instead thinking of it as simply more picture or do understand and just don't care - that is exactly a 6packJoe mentality towards OAR, not Buffy the show (perhaps maybe the makers a little since they seem to prefer 4x3) because it devalues the composition of the shots and the work of cinematographers and filmmakers who actually do this for a living.
And please let's not suggest that OAR purists should be happy enough with the DVDs as they are already available in 4x3. And whilst I don't necessarily agree with theprestige85 views, I don't see how he can't have a concern for the artist's rights to have their work represented correctly irrespective of whether he likes it in 16x9 (which he at least argued for on the merits of preferred composition rather than just filling your screen). If this is released on Blu-ray in it's OAR only, I hope iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, Netflix or all of them get the 16:9 versions because I for one won't be happy with having to watch the show in just it's OAR. Not after realizing how many episodes I love more in 16:9 than 4:3.

Uhm, or the disc version 16:9 and any other version OAR.
![]() No seriously, this topic has been discussed to death. The people wanting OAR blu-rays are saying that we should preserve what Joss Whedon had in mind. Well, if I'm going to pay a LOT of money for this on blu-ray, I'd want it to look the best it can be, and don't care that much about Joss Whedon. And I love Joss Whedon and pretty much every show he ever made. I really hope they include a way to add the black sides on the blu-ray so both sides in this discussion will be pleased. ![]() |

If I've always watched S4-7 in widescreen, I've never had any issues with the first seasons in 4:3... what I'm saying is that it's a bit eye-roll worthy when people wake up with some new issues they didn't have before (for the most part) and think they should stop enjoying what they've had for more than a decade now. It's a tad patronising too when they push it up onto others.
Like I said before, I'd like both options if necessary, or at least a release offering 16:9. |

Yeah, they only released them in 16:9 in R2 and R4, I think. However, it's missing most of the special features (including the audio commentaries.)

The aspect ratio debate is going nowhere. Let's just agree that we want the option for both on Blu-Ray.
Now, can we go back to those terrible new dusting effects ? ![]() This is much worse than the color/brightness issue, because they can't fix it as easily. They spent money and time (what a waste) to make those new effects, and I'm really worried we'll be stuck with them ![]() I think I'd be really okay if they started upscaling them (it might look decent enough for the 35mm seasons, look at Firefly), while recreating the other CGI effects, which I don't have a problem with so far (the portal in 1x10, Moloch's death, the Master's escape... they look pretty good to me). But we know the dusting effect too well, and it's too important to have it changed so radically. You can e-mail Fox (again) about the issue : http://www.foxstudios.com/request.html |
