The original release of Fruits Basket was only four discs. They crammed a ton of episodes on each disc and it completely ruined the video quality. They then used the same settings to encode their DVDs for the next decade or so, resulting in hundreds of horrible looking FUNi releases.

The reason the LE has 5 is because one of those discs contains 3 hours of extras. Someone though just told me on Twitter that the AC set re-used the LE discs excluding the 5th one for the extras.

It was more so FUNi using those alternate-angles than putting about 8 episodes on a disc (and at a time when releasing a two cour show in only four singles was absurd).

The original release of Fruits Basket had 6 episodes on 2 discs and 7 episodes on the other 2 discs (not any different from what they do now). Since FB was an early digipaint series it would more likely than not look like shit upscaled for bluray-according to Justin Sevakis. My set doesn't look too bad on a 1080P plasma tv playing it on a Sony bluray player.

It depends on how it's upscaled. Done properly and it'll be decent, done terribly, and well, you get say Blue Submarine No.6 or even worse, Digimon.

Also the split was 7/6/7/6? Huh, the LE went and did 7/7/7/5.

Do you have the Discotek DVD or the Bandai DVD? The Bandai DVDs are so bad that the Q-TEC crap wins, but the Discotek DVD on the other hand uses the JP DVD masters and they have more detail, the detail Q-TEC's smeary upscales always erase.

I have the Blue Submarine No. 6 Toonami Movie DVD from Bandai and the audio and video made me think I somehow bought a bootleg because of how bad it is.

Discotek's Blu-ray has the English Dub issue that I don't think was ever corrected unless you count the DVD re-release.

I've never seen Tenchi Universe (or Tokyo, for that matter), so will the movies make sense to me? I figure I wouldn't be missing much, but I might as well ask. I'm very well versed in the original 13 OVA episodes

For the most part, I'd say yes. The second film takes place in an alternate continuity after the end of the first OVA with a character only from the TV series (Kiyone) being a member of the cast. The first and third film are direct sequels to the Universe TV series, so you might be a little confused because Tenchi has a different mother. All in all, you should be able to muddle through. Honestly, though, I'd say just watch Universe already!!
[Show spoiler]You're missing out on a great show.

They're all garbage compared to the OVAs IMO, and movies stink too just be glad you haven't wasted your time.

The first two OVAs were my favorite part of the series until OVA 3 came along and soured my experience. For me, the Universe timeline will always hold a special place in my heart. Plus, Kiyone's my favorite gal (Washu is a very close second).

Now, I do share your opinion on Tokyo, lol.

Thank you for your opinion I only have the movies because DVD Pacific had the OVA set picture on the movie set, so I ordered the wrong one originally.

That's complete and total bullshit-the 3 movies are the best part of the franchise, the best one for me is Daughter Of Darkness-the others-Tenchi Muyo In Love and Tenchi Forever are really good too.

I personally like all previous Tenchi series including everyone's hated GXP. Though I haven't seen War On Geminar yet.

I would love to see Dual Parallel Trouble Adventure get rescued along with Photon.

GXP isn't bad-I had a blast the first time I watched it back in 2006.
