God I hope so, the amount of money I've spent. I will certainly not be upgrading my films from Blu-ray to 4k, I believe 1080p is great and the soundtracks in HD are excellent. I will buy future films in 4k though once it is around and at a reasonable price.

I hear that. I will always keep my Bluray's and then start buying 4k when it comes out. Only a small (10 or so) of my top films, think Goodfellas, I will rebuy.

I was in touch with bluraychip.dk who are the distributors of the regionfree chips for the Scandinavian market.

I told them that I upgraded my player from 1.08 to 1.17 and then it locked the region. They send me two files, the first is an 'update' file which is basically 1.01, but the player think it's a new update and will install it. When installed, the player shows 1.01 instead of the new 1.17. Then the second file is 1.08 and when installed, the player works perfectly regionfree again. I updated it to 1.17 again after a while, because I wanted the latest update, and then the machine locked to region A although it's really a B player. It's okay, as I have a PS3, too.

I have the two update files that the company send me, if anyone wants them.

Thanks for the post

NickMate, refer to the post above and drop him a PM. It's definitely worth region freeing the player. If you get stuck on the region freeing the firmware you can drop me a pm.

Default Pioneer BDP-120 - extremely stubborn with USB firmware updates

GREETINGS!!!!!!!!
I have a Pioneer BDP-120 blu-ray player and would like to install the latest update from their website, at version number BP9230200.

However, when I put the .MVP file onto my flash drive, and then plug it into my blu-ray player, I receive an error message starting with "There is more than one software file," and the blu-ray player refuses to find and use the firmware.

I have gotten firmware updates in the past to work, by going all the way to the UNIX command level and force-removing even the invisible files. I have also tried multiple formats for the flash drive itself. None of these tricks seem to be working this time.

What's going on? How do I just get this to work?

Note: due to an error in how the blu-ray.com forum administrator has set up my account privileges, I am unable to create a new thread for my topic. Therefore, I have no choice but to derail a current thread to ask for help. Could someone move my post to a new thread, and answer my question?

GREETINGS AGAIN!!
I have not yet received a response to my inquiry as to why my blu-ray player is being so stubborn, and why I cannot post new threads.
Could someone reply with an answer to my questions?

According to the firmware instructions for your BDP-120 the USB "should not contain any [other] files." Temporarily move the existing files off of the USB drive and make sure that the firmware file is the only file on the USB drive. Afterwards you can move the files back to the USB stick.

In terms of your forum account, the administrators didn't make an error in setting up your account. The ability to create new threads is a limitation on new members which we've all gone through. Once you have enough posts under your belt you'll be able to create new threads.

But I've done that. I've already erased the flash drive totally clean and moved only the firmware file onto it afterward. I've erased, formatted, re-erased, and re-formatted the drive so many times I've lost count and I still get an error message from my blu-ray player no matter what I do.

Hi,

I would much appreciate receiving 'the two update files' at krzysztof[dot]libiszewski[at]gmail[dot]com

Might want to hold off purchasing the 150. The BDP-160 is due (in Europe) this month. Hopefully it can be hacked to play all region discs too.

[1 month later]

Does anyone have an answer to my question? My blu-ray player still thinks that more than one software file is on the flash stick.

Really annoying, I paid over 240 for my BDP-150 from a multi-region player site!

Does this region free fw work with the BDP-160?

Chances are your player is properly modded though and not simply firmware.

It is unlikely that the firmware for the 150 will work with the 160.

Yes, they stated it had a chip! Region is selectable by pushing button 1 or 2 on the remote (while the machine is off).

Looking for a second player for the spare room! Are there any other players on the market which allow custom firmware?

Why? You can't install it anyway.
