Saw a beautiful 35mm print of this last night as part of the Glasgow Film Theatre's Lynch season. First part looked a lot like the R1 DVD colour wise, very dark with strong reds & yellows. Second part had a lovely gold-cast with earthy tones. Hopefully we get a 4K scan from someone like Criterion as the current blu is way off...

How does this version compare to the rest of the releases?

Japan is getting a bunch of new editions and a "2K remaster" Lost Highway is a part of the bunch. I wonder if it's a repack or an all new transfer? It's got killer coverart as does Muholland Drive and Inland Empire which are a part of the same line.

It's apparently from 2010.

Japan is region A, but most of their releases are region free.

The only real problem with Japanese releases is they are often relatively expensive.

Oh, right.
Will it be NTSC or PAL?
I will look it up Japan a bit

Blu-rays aren't NTSC or PAL like DVDs. A very tiny number of them are 1080i/50hz, but IIRC that's exclusively european/australian ones.

Sounds great!!! The German version I have of Lost Highway is very mediocre. Would love an upgrade!

The guy commenting above says the "2K Remaster" is from 2010, and if he's right, it would be the same one used for Germany

Oh really?
Lemme ask; When I ordered the HongKong Region A Edko version of 'The Handmaiden' from Badpanda, it didn't play. I was confused. It's Region A after all.
After talking to customer service, they admitted it was their fault for not clarifying that it was PAL, and they even changed the specs on their website right after (see screenshot).
I'm guessing you're saying the real reason it didn't play was because it was 1080i?
Am I correct?
PAL and NTSC don't come into play when it comes to Blu-ray?

Hong Kong is an exception because it was a British colony.

Ive got a different German one from the normal one - its got a car sideways on in a funny digipak type thing. I much prefer the look compared to the normal dull amaray. Same disc though (checked this years back).

Actually, Hong Kong is an exception because it is inside China, and China uses 50Hz electrics and thus, television broadcasting. DVDs and Blu-rays in China/Hong Kong (and possibly/probably elsewhere in Asia) can be NTSC or PAL, and 1080i(29.97)/1080p or 1080/50i. This is because, as many in Europe know, modern TVs manufactured for 50Hz video countries can play 60Hz video, while most TVs manufactured for 60Hz video countries like the US and Japan are deliberately not able to play 50Hz video for reasons known only to the product manufacturers.

In general, any Blu-ray from East Asia will be 1080i/p, but only Japan and (I believe) South Korea and Taiwan are going to be 100% free of 50Hz video releases. I'm sure it's no coincidence that those three countries seem to press most of the optical discs sold in the region, too.

The upcoming Japan release has mk2 on the cover, so its sourced from the same master as previous releases.

That's news to me that asian countries also have 1080i/50hz, but clearly some do! That's the first I've ever seen 1080i/50hz referred to as PAL, as well? Maybe it's accurate? I've just seen other people go NTSC/PAL IS OVER but maybe they meant in general

I should import this so it would guarantee a Criterion announcement within a few hours of it shipping.

No surprise Universal has not bothered with a Blu-ray release in the USA of this film. It took them ages to release it on DVD finally. I do have the Japan and German releases of this on Blu-ray, the Japan release is definitely the one to get it's a little better. I'd say a Criterion release of this is possible one day since they released Mullholland Drive on Blu-ray. I love that road rage scene in the film, it's classic, if you have ever been tailgated before it's refreshing, lol.
