Oppo to cease manufacturing

As announced on April 2nd, 2018, OPPO Digital will gradually stop manufacturing new products.

It has been 14 years since we established OPPO Digital in the United States, and with the support of our customers, technical partners, and movie/music studios, we produced many award-winning Hi-Fi audio products and universal disc players, spanning three generations from DVD, Blu-ray, to 4K UHD.

As our latest 4K UHD players reach the pinnacle of their performance, it is time to say goodbye. We are proud to have made such well-regarded products and to have served the enthusiast community. Without our customers' suggestions, encouragement, and support, we could not have accomplished these achievements.

Though OPPO Digital will gradually stop manufacturing new products, existing products will continue to be supported, warranties will still be valid, and both in-warranty and out-of-warranty repair services will continue to be available. Firmware will continue to be maintained and updates released from time to time. Customers can rest assured that they will continue to receive the high quality service and support that they have come to expect from OPPO Digital.

We greatly appreciate the opportunity to have developed such exciting products for our customers. It has been an honor.

This is absolutely devastating news for audiophiles and videophiles. Oppo was one of the last manufacturers fully committed to SACD hardware.

This is going to have massive repercussions in the high-end hardware market. I guess they saw the writing on the wall regarding physical media and decided it was time to pack it in before the market shrank even further.

Oppo seemed like a healthy business before this announcement.

Dang it. Well, I've immediately used some of my tax refund (while I still have it) to pick-up a BDP-203 before they all disappear or their price jumps up everywhere. I was planning on getting one sometime soon anyway, either the 203 or the next generation model, which evidently won't be a thing now. I'll probably just store this one away in my closet until my BDP-93 dies or when I upgrade the projector in my theater room to 4K... Sigh, a very sad day this is, indeed.

I posted some comments in the 103 thread. Apologies for the "cross post" but I've modified my remarks and fleshed out my initial thoughts further:

I had ironically been thinking just last week about how long OPPO would continue making gear in the context of where packaged media may be in, say, five years and how/whether that "forecast" should influence my UHD BD buying habits.

I've been in something of an apocalyptic mood, brought on by the approach of the end of the 5-year extended warranty on my Mitsu DLP. It's vexing for a couple of reasons, one of which is that . . . should the display fail (and it just last week stopped responding to the remote) . . . I'm not really wanting to get an OLED smaller than my current 82-incher and the current max size of I think 77" OLEDs are still pricey for my tax bracket.

For those of us just as if not even more into music as film and therefore interested in UNIVERSAL players handling DVD-Audio and SA-CD, this development significantly shrinks the market/choices.

Unlike SA-CD, DVD-A is not seeing new titles hit the format. That format might be heading towards the same purgatorial island that 3D BD is arguably looking to be headed towards: Still plenty of discs out there but a far from optimal playback situation. With 3D BD, it's the flat panel manufacturers' abandonment of 3D support. With DVD-A, it's that players which support it are increasingly upmarket. If you want the former, you're looking at having to consider a projector; the latter, McIntosh, Marantz (?), Cambridge, etc. for players.

It will be interesting to see how omnipresent (or not) the usual company mouthpieces continue to be on these pages.

yes and expect prices to fly way up...I have an 83 and a 103 and highly recommend the 203. Get one now. I am even though I do not own a 4K tv.

I just ordered a 203. I am going to look at sending my 83 in to have the disc tray replaced.

Bummer. While I am just about all digital now, I did have The Oppo OPDV971H DVD player. I felt pretty excited about at the time.

I bought my 83 here on bluray.com from a person who had the tray replaced and I can tell you it works flawlessly. My original 83 had a sticky drawer. I sold that one but missed it a lot so I picked up the one I have second hand and use it in my BR setup.

get an Cambridge Audio player, it has the same internals as the Oppo.

try getting tech support...see the difference on what OPPO will do for you here in the USA and what Cambridge will do for you from the UK...

just ordered one from Crutchfield...60 day returns, in case prices change but if anything will go higher. Besides Oppo's support, they give lifetime support on what they sell.

dang it! I was hoping to get an new OPPO at some point now I'll have to go used. this is a shame to hear.
