Never even bothered trying it myself, I've always been fine with whatever the disc provided. Well let me rephrase that, some discs can be garbage, but still I'd just as soon watch them as is.

Then why would you pay $100 extra for the Darbee version? Just get the 103 or 105. Not the 103D or 105D.

Hi there, got a question maybe someone is familiar with this:
When i play a movie with 1.0 mono (C only) audio from a 4K UHD blu ray source
the Oppo sends it to the receiver as 2.0 FL FR.
Is this the way it supposed to be?
If the source is 1.0 C i would like to get a 1.0 C as output as well.

Are you 100% sure that the movie has been encoded with just one 'centre' mono audio track. As quite often 'mono' movies are encoded with two mono tracks for the left and right channels.

If you are not sure and you have a computer. Please run your problem file through an application called MediaInfo, which must be set to text mode and post what it reports 'in full' as a text file.

Which source? Most discs are encoded as 2.0 mono. Are you sending bitstream or PCM?

No, some discs are certainly 1.0 encoded. I wouldn’t be able to name any off the top of my head but I know I’ve come across them.

Why it would bother anyone how that’s output, I don’t know. Just turn on Dolby Surround and a mono movie will come from the centre speaker.

If it’s 1-channel Dolby or DTS and output as bitstream, it’ll output as 1 channel. If it’s output via PCM or a 1-channel PCM track, it outputs as 2 channels.

This is the info given by the Oppo as source info:

And this is how it's been put out as:

It's LPCM, i have the oppo put everything out as Bitstream, it doesn't matter if i switch to LPCM output.
I can ofcourse make my receiver let it go to center, but i wonder if it's standard that the Oppo
puts it out as 2.0 FL FR.

Movie btw is Rosemary's Baby (1968)

We had a similar discussion in the AVSForum a couple of years ago. Ultimately the Oppos won't deliver LPCM 1.0 over HDMI (possibly an HDMI limitation), and converts to LPCM 2.0 for delivery. Bitstream 1.0 can and will be delivered over HDMI, unless the Oppo is set for LPCM output, in which case the audio is converted to LPCM 2.0 (again, no 1.0 LPCM delivery over HDMI).

Criterion Collection BDs are often 1.0 LPCM encoded for mono tracks (Dr. Strangelove and The Great Escape in my library). I'd certainly prefer 1.0 channel delivery (fewer conversions and less processing), but Dolby Pro-Logic II does do a great job of redirecting/remixing mono 2.0 (L/R) to the center channel only.

The oppo is set up for Bitstream output either case i get the same result with LPCM output.
If i got it right, no matter what i set up for (Bitstream or LPCM) output audio over HDMI remains 2.0 mono only?
Thanks, then i won't look further.

Yes. Selecting "Bitstream" for the HDMI Audio Format only preserves bitstream if the source is bitstream. If the source audio is LPCM, it will not be converted to bitstream and is output as LPCM regardless of the HDMI Audio Format setting. (The User Manuals don't directly explain this, but it is evident from the "Audio Signal Reference Chart" on page 59 of the manual for the 203.)

From my testing:
  • If your audio source is bitstream (any flavor of Dolby/DTS) monaural 1.0 and "HDMI Audio Format" is "Bitstream" then output will be bitstream 1.0 (C).
  • If your audio source is bitstream (any flavor of Dolby/DTS) monaural 1.0 and "HDMI Audio Format" is "LCPM" then output will be LPCM 2.0 (L/R).
  • If your audio source is LPCM monaural 1.0 then output will be LPCM 2.0 (L/R) with any "HDMI Audio Format" setting except "Off."

Again, this seems to suggest that LPCM 1.0 (C) is not supported over HDMI.

Excellent, thank you for your answer.
The manual didn't mention anything about 1.0 ch. because it isn't supported i suppose.

I’ve always assumed this is a lossless fold-down if it’s true mono embedded over 2 channels.

Hello all, I have a 203 that I bought almost 5 years ago. 4 years ago I modded it to play all regions. I purchased the JVB internal option and installed it without a hitch. Over the past 4 years I haven't had a single problem playing my region B discs. However, yesterday I came upon an issue for the first time. I changed my player to region B and popped in a region B disc only to get the region warning, as if my player was still in region A mode. I double checked with several other of my region B discs and they all worked perfectly. It's just this one disc, the Studio Canal 2021 release of La Grande Illusion. I tried it in the other regions, and of course it didn't work in those, but I was thinking maybe it was accidentally encoded for a different region. Anyways, has anyone seen something like this? I have to believe it is an issue with the disc itself, but am curious if anyone has a workaround or fix for it. Or, am I just SOL. Thanks for any help!

If you haven't done so already...

Try erasing your OPPO's 'Persistent Storage'.

Ive had the same issue with mine a couple times over the years, and erasing persistent storage is definitely one way to fix it. It didnt fix the last issue I had, so I literally just disconnected the region free mod and re-connected it, and its been working perfectly since.
