So I picked up the six theatrical films at a local show last week. At least, according to the wiki site there's only 6 movies, but the Discotek cases call Nostradamus and Dead or Alive 5 and 6, so I guess there's 7? I'm confused, but whatever. I got 6 movies last week.

They were all quite good, but I have to say the quality is hit or miss, not just with the films, but the discs themselves.

Mamo was a really good film, however, Lupin seemed like a complete idiot in this one. In Part 1, Lupin was super smart, almost always knowing when he was going to step into a trap, and would often do so with a plan to get out of it. In this movie, he seemed oblivious to everything going on around him and then was surprised when he got caught or something. I also feel like the movie ran for about 20 minutes longer than it needed too. Mamo was a weird villain who felt like he would have fit better in a DBZ movie.

Cagliostro was a aboslutely masterpiece of a film. Lupin's intelligence returned, the story was beautiful, and I liked how each character got a bit of screen time. It was weird to see Fujiko with blonde hair though.

I think I liked Babylon more than Mamo because thet movie was really weird. Never thought I'd see actual aliens in Lupin, but here here are. Although, like with Mamo, this one was much longer than it needed to be. Did we really need an arduous chase scene between Lupin and Zenigata around the same billboard for what felt like 10 minutes straight?

Nostradamus was pretty good. Not the best of the lot, but not the worst either. I am a bit confused on how the politician was able to construct a building that could house countless stadiums and the like within its foundations. I know it's Lupin, but that just seemed to be reaching a bit too much. Yes, I know, I could accept aliens, but not a million foot building. Anyway, the villains were kind of lackluster compared to those featured in the other movies. Animation was really nice. Probably the best of the non-Miyazaki films. Lastly, I need to say that this release felt like a complete let down compared to the other ones. All of the other Discotek movies included liner notes, but this one does not. Even the way they did the English vintage credits stuff left a bit to be desired. The other releases would show the full on openings with the English text. Here, they just cut it off after the movie title came up. Hell, there's not even any reversible artwork like there is with every other movie. It's hard to believe this is the most recent release from Discotek as opposed to the oldest.

Moving on, Dead or Alive was another interesting piece with a really unique ending. Interesting how everything revovled around nanobots. I do have to say the film did lose me a bit towards the end when it suddenly became more of a Cyberpunk film. Still, I enjoyed all of the characters and their situation. I thought Lupin posing as the prince was ingenius and back in line with his character from Part 1 and Cagliostro.

Lastly, there is The First. I was skeptical with the CGI but it actually worked well with the Lupin designs. This might be the first CGI anime I have ever praised. The story itself was a bit too redundant. The villain was kind of awkward. It also sucks that this release did not include a slipcase so my shelf looks weird having 5 movies with them and one movie without.

I have The First and it had a slipcase. The movie has been out a while so you must have gotten one without. You may able to find one on ebay.

The wiki is wrong on the number of movies. The 4th Lupin movie is called The Fuma Conspiracy. Discotek hasn't put that one out on blu, I imagine they would at some point. There's really 8 theatrical films. The ones you mentioned, Fuma Conspiracy, and the Lupin vs Detective Conan movie.

It says The Fuma Conspiracy is an OVA though.

I don't really count the Lupin/Conan movies as actual Lupin movies, hence why I didn't mention them.

It's a theatrical film, that's how it was released in Japan. I believe it was originally supposed to be an ova but it switched over to being a theatrical release, sorts like Batman Mask of the Phantasm.

I’m still surprised that Discotek hasn’t relicensed Lupin III: Strange Psychokinetic Strategy, especially since it would fit right in the Nihon Nights label. Though it could be because Toho has the rights to the film (at least, I think so).
About the only things I’m waiting on Lupin-wise is two specials (Alcatraz Connection and Napoleon’s Dictionary). Still haven’t gotten to any of the TV series, but that because I haven’t had the time to start watching them.

SPS has no known HD master, only a DVD transfer is known to exist currently

Of course there could be one that hasn't been released yet, like with some of the other Nihon nights catalog

It’s always possible Discotek could re-release it, sans the DVD, but I’d highly recommend picking it up just in case it does truly go OOP.

Yeah, best not to take the chance. I picked it up with Beautiful Dreamer and it should ship when Voyage to Danger comes back in stock. Appreciate the recco.

People are already trying to flip it for 100$ on eBay. This is one of my favorite Lupin specials. A lot darker than your average Lupin affair with some nice animation. I’d be surprised if it stayed out of print but it has been out for a while.

My policy is to buy any and all Lupin STAT. The discs seemingly can go out of print overnight. Obviously that's not Disco's fault, but damn it's maddening.

If you guys are lamenting not getting Island of Assassins, perhaps the consolation prize of the art book on sale might help:

Good news, kinda. Lupin Zero is slated for a Japanese Blu release on June the 21st. No subs/dubs on the release that I can find, and there's still no word about western releases, but hopefully we'll get an announcement here soon.
