Watching game of thrones would probably take most people 4 to 5 months which streaming would work out to 75 dollars. But the person who bought the series owns the series and can either re watch the series or resell series which brings down the cost significantly.

Perhaps they want to watch gotham when it was on netflix. The complete series cost 25 dollars at one point and netflix premium costs 20 dollars a month these days. You would need to watch 100 episodes in less then a month for it to be cheaper to stream gotham then to outright buy it and again that is ignoring the used and resell market of physical.

People only have so much time in the day I doubt to many people get that much value out of streaming services when you look at what they watched in a month.
Unfortunately most people never do the math. They see a subscription service as $15 for thousands of things that they could watch instead of actually looking at the price of what they do watch.

Streaming is expensive, has been, is, and likely to continue. Mine is currently $60 to the ISP ($80 total), Prime $9, Netflix $20, Disney+ $9, Total $98 a month.

The cost to the ISP (or additional cost over the cheapest available internet service) should definitely be factored into the cost of streaming but I've never seen anyone else take that into account.

The only Blu-ray of Ben Affleck I appear to have is Armageddon, but on DVD (off the top of my head) I do have The Sum Of All Fears, Changing Lanes and yes Ender, I even have Daredevil.

If I spend money on a disc and it only goes in my player once, it was still worth it to me to have it be the best presentation possible for that one time.

I would add to that quote tv shows as well, since I seem to be buying them on disc more and more lately.
As one's case of CRS advances, each viewing becomes like unto the first.

I certainly do my share of bagging on streaming, but I can't really blame the cost of my internet service upon it.

I use my internet service to make lots of video calls and also for online multiplayer video gaming. I would need/want a robust internet service even if there were no streaming services.

I consider my monthly streaming cost, for the streaming services themselves, to be zero thanks to the use of fuzzy math.

I have Netflix thru account sharing. No cost to me.

I have HBO Max as a "free" perk with my AT&T cell phone service.

I pay for Amazon Prime, but I have been doing that continuously since Prime began in 2005 and several years before Prime offered any kind of streaming. I pay for Prime for the shipping perk, then as now. I have never thought of it as a streaming expense.

I have been offered Disney+ thru account sharing, but I turned it down. Anything Disney that I want, I pretty much already own on disc. I don't care about Star Wars and MCU serials and while that's the main draw for many people, these do nothing for me.

The $60 is not exact but close. If not for streaming we could get by with the phone hotspot if we had a better signal. Some have suggested that we use Redbox instead of Netflix by mail. That is fine if a kiosk really close by but my nearest is 8.1 miles away, 16.2 round trip * 59¢ mile = $9.56 milage + $2.25 rental for a total of $11.81 per title viewed assuming you return the next day.

My Netflix by mail is $15 a month. The last time I calculated my average per title was ≈ $1.93

The way to use Redbox is not to make special trips for it, but to use it on routine shopping trips to the grocery store, Walmart, etc. People have to make those trips, so using Redbox should not incur any transportation costs that they would not be paying, anyway.

To me it is a cost like any other household or business expense. When we had a home business we could deduct certain cost related to that business (power, phone, floor space, etc.). IIRC the last filing (years ago) was almost a 100 pages

I use my ISP for shopping, banking, food service, lookups and other sundries.

You want to add it - then you have to add the space your media takes up in your home for mortgage, rent, insurance, etc.

BTW =-if you are ordering your media, as I know almost all of you do - better add YOUR ISP charges because . . . no ISP, no ordering disc.

Fair is fair.

I have been at my current address for over seven years and in that time I have added over 1400 titles on disc. Doing so has had no impact upon my housing cost.

Insuring a collection is entirely optional, too. I would bet that most people do not have any special coverage for their disc collections.

To be fair, a person can easily get by with minimal internet service if all that they use it for is shopping, banking, and "lookups." In fact, they can just use their cell phone internet connection for stuff that low in bandwidth usage and forego internet service altogether.

It has absorbed space you could be using for something else. You pay for that space

Their home owner or renters insurance provides some coverage but you would need an umbrella policy to cover it all in the event of fire or theft. There is a risk involved. Don't forget that.

But most also use their ISP for watching movies, TV shows or sports. If you wanted, you wouldn't have to pay a dime for content there are so many free services now.

I am paying for that space no matter how I choose to use it. Whether I place movie shelves along my walls or hang fuzzy black light posters instead, my cost for that space is unchanged. It is not like I have to feed and water my discs.

Pretty much everything that we do involves risk, but that doesn't mean we have to insure ourselves against every variety of it. Most of us probably don't insure much of anything beyond our home, a tiny portion of its contents, and our cars.

Obviously, those who use a lot of bandwidth need a more robust internet service, but those that just use the internet for more basic purposes do not.

I already consider my streaming services cost to be zero as I detailed earlier.

I no more factor the cost of internet service into my viewing expenses than I do the cost of powering my home theater devices. I use the internet for too many things to peg its cost upon streaming alone the same as I use my electricity for too many things to attribute it as a disc watching expense.

Probably works for some, does not work for us, we are out in the sticks. Walmart visits, 2 to 3 times a month to pickup orders made ahead of time. Local grocery (no Redbox) visits, very few a month. Walmart (via FedEx) and Amazon deliveries, every 2 to 4 days.

As a private individual there is no requirement to do so but if you operated home business and claimed your ISP cost as a deduction then you would have know how much was personal use and business use. If one really wanted to know I could come pretty close to calculating the energy expense of my home theater cost per month. Since there no monetary advantage to do so I have no inclination to do such at this time.

For me, I find discussion about upcoming disc, sound tracks, bargains on disc or even some new stuff on streaming much more interesting. “And I am unanimous in that” (Mrs. Slocombe).

You're a scary guy.

I have all of those except for Reindeer Games; that must mean that I am kinda spooky, too.

I can't find any movie named Feast that has Ben Affleck in it, though. Executive producer doesn't count.
