Default Blu-ray Momentum going into Transformers week...

I was just checking out the Amazon numbers at

http://charts.highdefdigest.com/rank.aspx

and I compared the top 50 right now and 36 OF THE TOP 50 ARE BLU-RAY What's even funnier than that is the average ranking of those 36 is 350 vs. the average ranking of the 14 HD DVD is 361. Just thought it was interesting.

Hey,

Most HD DUD forums have organized a buy date for next week, (AV$, Highdefforum, Highdefdigest) and I plan to buy Blu to counter though I guess we don't have an official buy day planned.

I can't wait to see how it all goes down. Plus big annoucement from Sony about PS3 tomorrow (though most people know what that will be already.)

I think we all have confirmed that this should be a big week for this title, in both S-DVD and HD-DVD.

It is what it is. We just need to take care of our Blu from here on out thru the holidays.

I know this next week is going to be big for them. I was just pointing out that we are completely dominating sells right now, at least on Amazon, and that we may yet be able to make it through Transformers week unscathed and retain our weekly Neilson sells trophy.

8 of the Top 10 were blu-ray. If you click on the HD-DVD vs Blu-ray link it compares the Top 10 sellers for both formats. The average for BD was 133 while it was 260 for HD-DVD.

Obviously Transformers being #6 means it will mov ethe most units, but I think HD-DVD supporters would have to be worried at this point as these figures do not suggest the landslide they were hoping. I'll be surprised if they carry the week even.

Let's also not forget that Amazon tends to be more favorable to them than the B&M stores.

Another thing to point out on the HD-DVD vs Blu-ray page...

Bladerunner is already in the Top 10 for HD-DVD. Great movie, but come on... how pitiful is that? A minor title this far out is already all they have to spend money on.

As long as BD owners pick up at least 1 BD next week, the Nielsen numbers should be Blu again, and probably for the rest of the year.

I like Bladerunner very much and I am getting it. However how can you believe that this is anything but a minor title? This is a catalog release. No, stop me right there. This is a 30-yr-old ancient catalog release that has appeal only to us geeks. ONLY US GEEKS... no one else on Earth cares. It also was not a majro hit even when it was released. It is a cult sci-fi movie. The fact that it already is holding a Top 10 spot for HD-DVD shows just how thin the pipeline is.

Some might say the majority of early adopting BD and HD buyers are geeks.

I often think people on these sites are just too close to the issue to see things clearly. I love Bladerunner, but it won't even win the week it is released. Not even 1 week. Do you seriously think in terms of sales volume that it belongs in the same conversation as POTC or Spidey?

It would kill HD DVD fans if they lose the sales ratio the week of Transformers. I really don't expect Blu-ray to win that week, but it wouldn't surprise me if the numbers are close like 52-48. I plan on buying 2-3 extra BDs that week.

I'm buying 4 unless the neighbor gives me the $30 he owes me, then I'll get 6.

I'm going to buy as many as I can that's for sure.

Blade Runner is NOT a minor title.

Heck, even Minority Report wouldn't be a minor title. As far as Philip K. Dick movies go.

But this is the one thing to keep in mind when it comes to the performance of Transformers as an individual title, versus the overall sales of discs in the two formats: HD DVD simply doesn't offer much of a selection right now. They have half as many titles going into Q4 as Blu-ray does. And Blu-ray has many, many current and past blockbusters, day-and-date titles as well as cult and fan favorites. So every single week between now and New Year's there'll be something juicy to buy if you are Blu-ray enabled. We're spoilt for choice here. If you're stuck with HD DVD, you really don't have too many options. So naturally you'll get Transformers and anything half-decent that comes your way -- basically the Kubrick and Potter series, and Blade Runner.

But even though Blu-ray purchases will be spread over a much, much wider selection of titles, I'm still willing to bet the Kubricks, the Potters and the Blade Runner sets will end up selling better on Blu than on Red.

Also, considering the overall volume of titles, Blu might perform significantly better on the Transformers week than most here expect. Perhaps not enough to win the week, but certainly enough to keep the momentum.

Guys, my Blu-ray habit is getting pretty expensive lately with Fox back on board.

Even at that, I'll be getting four or more titles next week:

The Invisible
Hollow Man
Surf's Up
Halloween (maybe)
Red Dawn (if I can find it)

Transformers has been hd dvds biggest seller since it went on preorder. Does that mean that those sales have already been counted and won't be on the Nielson rating for the week that it is actually released?
