Picked up WOMAN IN THE MOON on MOC for pretty cheap, but I think I'll opt for the KINO on SPIES because I'm very interested to see the original trailer. I'm a trailer collector and silent film trailers are usually pretty wild, besides being ultra rare.

Great idea OP! Thanks for this thread, and the international overview of releases.
I even got the UK Metropolis 'gold bar' version, but sadly did not win, even though I don't have a region free player (yet). (trying to control my steelbook obsessions, must keep my fist down...........) |

Arrow has announced Hangmen Also Die! for the UK market through Arrow Academy. Release date is August 29th. Extras appear to be the same as the domestic Cohen Media release, and also includes English subs which the latter lacked.

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and Metropolis are the most gorgeous looking Silent Films on Blu-ray, stunning quality. Nibelungen is amazing too and Nosferatu.
Can't wait for Fritz Lang's Der müde Tod on Blu-ray, I saw it live with the original orchestra in Berlin at the official 2k restoration premiere. |

I think I prefer the Masters of Cinema version of Die Nibelungen to the Kino (which seems a bit too tinted in green), at least in comparison. It is a great movie though, from noble soldiers like Siegfried and Hagen, to the king who starts off wishy-washy but become in times of crisis a noble leader as well. For those who might argue whether Hagen is noble or not, keep in mind that he is a simply a soldier following orders. And the will of king is all. Then there's the innocent Kriemhild, who after the death of her husband, turns evil and murders her own child to achieve her revenge. There's the bitter Brunhild, the noble Volker, Klein-Rogge as Attila, and George John in multiple parts (and disguises). Poor Mime, now that's a bad hair day. Great film. This is my favorite and in my opinion the greatest of Lang's films.

So I just finished watching Destiny on blu ray, looks very good. It's been many years since I watched the dvd version though so really can't compare the two. The blu ray does still did need some damage clean up at least in one scene (in the house fire where you see a very prominent vertical line at a key moment with Death). The musical soundtrack is awesome!
I've also starting watching The Gambler on blu-ray, and wow the soundtrack which for some bizarre reason features a prominent xylophone is pretty brutal to listen to. Xylophone of all things! This isn't a freaking Bugs Bunny cartoon! It will be interesting to see if there are any variations in the picture if Destiny comes out on MOC. |
