45 months isn't particularly long. If I want to watch those 50 movies for the rest of my life I can do so with the Blu-rays without spending another cent. If I wanted to watch them with a subscription I would have to continue spending at least $11 per month for decades (and the price will most likely increase many times over those decades).

How many times are you going to watch your purchased movies? 3, 4, 5? Remember: the more movies you own, the less you watch each one. That's an undeniable fact.

And 4 years IS a long time. Decades? What aload of BS!

10 dollars each is pretty high with what disney has done to its physical market. going though my Disney purchases this year I bought 30 titles with an average cost working out to around 4.86 dollars each.

The main savings with disney plus is probably skipping theater showings.
They released around 10 big films this year. watching 8 of them would probably be more then breaking even compared to going to the theaters by yourself. with a family of 4 streaming 2 movies rather then going to the theaters would cover the cost of disney plus.

Ownership, ownership, ownership.

Disney hasn’t turned a profit yet (the year they do so is always just around the corner), it’s possible that the only way they can make a profit in a few years is to lease some of their content out).

With disc, the content is secure. I can watch what I want, when I want. Even now, Disney doesn’t have all their output available.

How many times do you need to be schooled abouty Disney+ making a profit? On December 10, 2020 the CFO showed a chart. On the chart was their expectation of when Disney+ would be profitable. And that date was by the end of 2024. As it is, there is a 99% chance it will happen by the end of 2023 - a year early.

FY = Full Year BTW

There are plenty of movies and TV shows that I have watched repeatedly for decades. I have no doubt that will continue. With discs I can watch every movie I buy as many times as I want for as long as I want without ever spending any more money.

If I was watching via subscriptions I would either need to subscribe to many subscriptions all the time (which would cost way more than what I spend on discs) or I would need to pick one or two subscriptions each month (which would drastically limit my choices). And regardless of which method I chose I'd have to spend another $50 per month to upgrade my internet service to be able to watch all that streaming content.

Streaming subscriptions would certainly not save me money.

Some great catalog title news at the Bits (here).

Some positive Disney disc news: The Abyss on UHD - Oh Yea

Another favorite of mine, Dragonslayer on UHD disc. Have it in HD via MA but the audio is almost mono. The DVD audio is a fairly good Dolby Surround. IIRC, the best audio for this title was on Beta Hi-Fi.

You think that Disney isn't releasing their Disney+ shows on disc because people would spend less on them then they will end up spending on Disney+ subscriptions. You also think that subscribing to Disney+ is a much cheaper option that buying Disney content on disc.

Those two statements are contradictory.

The more movies I own, or have access to, the less time there is to watch each one over again is true no matter how I buy, or access, movies.

Decades of use is BS, is it?

I own laserdiscs that are 30 years old.

I own DVDs that are 25 years-old.

I own blu-rays that are 15 years-old.

I can still watch them all. I will expire long before my discs will.

I could believe it. Because it's another Fox title that Disney didn't restore, that was finished before the purchase, available on streaming if I'm not mistaken. What would be impressive is if they actually paid for one of these restorations themselves. Not counting Avatar, which they made all that money with bringing it back to cinemas before the sequel.

How many times I watch a movie that I own is not really the point for me, anyway. The point is to have the best viewing and listening experience possible when I do choose to watch it.

I also really like knowing that the movie that I own on disc is not subject to any revisionist editing later; the version I bought yesterday is the one that I will own tomorrow.

I also do not need access to everything. I only need access to the titles that I choose to own.

Watched Pulp Fiction 4K disc last night and it was a awesome -- a definite "must buy."

As far as the whole Disney streaming/physical media thing goes. The MCU has worn thin on me now, so Disney+ is fine. I own 1 Disney disc and that's Rogue One, because it's a demo-worthy disc. The others, not so much from what I've read. They're either too dark or too low in volume levels. They're also priced slightly higher than the average, because it's Disney. I blind bought Lightyear on 4K disc a couple of weeks ago (have yet to receive it), because it was $9, so we'll see if it's a demo-disc once it arrives.

I am not a Star Wars junkie. Other than the original trilogy, the rest is pretty much disposable eye candy except for Rogue One; I actually liked it.

The MCU has grown tiresome, too. It very much seems to be a quantity over quality proposition.

Agreed. Heck I still watch DVD from 20 years ago sometimes. I have a horror marathon in the last couple of weeks of October so that’s 16-18 Blu-rays at random every year.
Also, have Christmas discs we watch every year across the holiday.

In addition, I often just randomly stick a film on the HT when I feel the urge.

I also need to get through 200 unwatched discs!
I get a heck of a lot of use out of my collection.

Just to be clear: you don't care for most of what Disney makes so you're fine with paying $100 a year for Disney+? It sounds like just buying a few discs would be much cheaper.

I didn't say most. I said the MCU. There's plenty of other Disney properties and acquisitions that I like. I also have it bundled with HULU and ESPN for a low annual price. I definitely get my money's worth.

Okay, that makes more sense.

This whole debate reminds me of when Universal launched Peacock and heavily advertised that it included all of The Office (which was previously Netflix's most watched show). It makes me wonder how many people subscribe to Peacock (or previously subscribed to Netflix) month after month primarily to watch The Office instead of just buying the complete series (in either physical or digital form).
