CinemaCon 2021: Studios & Exhibition Convene To Sort Out An Industry Teetering On Edge Of Survival

I think we talked about this one before.

Quote:
“If you want to survive, you have to get rid of the buildings you’re losing money in. We’re going to need to downsize. It’s going to happen,” says one mid-sized exhibition boss.
Quote:
Yet, for some, the exhibition recession has provided opportunity. B&B wound up picking up multiplex leases, and even renovated at the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN, which was previously an AMC then-owned by CMX. Also in that mix were the former Alamo Drafthouse in Kansas City, the Morrisville in North Carolina, and the Sedalia Galaxy 10 in Missouri, to name a few.

CMX were the ones that remodeled the Mall Of America location, not B&B.

I don't know why CMX dropped that location though and kept the Burnsville one.

The MOA one is okay.. decent seats.. but the screens are so tiny and each theatre only has like 20 seats.

NATO said we lost 1000 screens due to the shutdown. IMO it's closer to 2000. The article states that 400 movie theaters closed permanently.

If the 2000 is correct that is still only 5% of the total screens we had before the pandemic. But the 400 theaters - that's 7%

Really? I've always wanted to go to the MOA location. That's disappointing. I was actually going to check it out today.

^^ I'm guessing a lot of those are the dollar theatres/second run theatres.

Early digital releases pretty much killed that market.

The seats are okay, but there's little tables attached to them that could get in your way after awhile. Of course I haven't been there since CMX owned it so not sure if it's still the same.

But if you do go, go to a cheap matinee and get a seat like in the 2nd row.

Otherwise I like CMX Burnsville and AMC Eden Prairie... I've always wanted to check out St Louis Park Showplace Icon.

How about a survey asking if I'd be okay with banning cell phones from the theater? Of course I'm sure it's government regulations pushing them to consider this. Next they'll want every movie to have a box in the corner of the screen with someone doing sign language.

Even in a sea of asinine posts, yours truly stands out among all the rest. It's really good to know you have such contempt for people with disabilities in general and the elderly and hearing impaired (which includes me) in particular, because just when anyone might think their opinion of you couldn't be any lower, surely you will find a way to double down and find an even lower place in other's opinion of you.

So take your ableism and please store it safely in a secure location where the sun don't shine.

You're seriously going to lay a guilt trip on me because I don't want closed captions permanently on movies in theaters? Who wants that? How do you think audiences would react if they showed up and saw that on a movie? Regal already has closed caption glasses for the hearing impaired to wear. I'm trying to help movie theaters to survive. If they did what Regal's survey suggested, people would just go home and watch movies on streaming without captions and theaters would be dead.

Ableism dressed in the clothes of "but I mean well" are the worst look.

And FYI some theater chains have already done the open captions thing and, funny thing, NOBODY COMPLAINED ABOUT IT.

In the regal app. it states Closed Caption. I don't know how those work as I never seen them.

You would ask the staff to provide you with a decoder, a smallish device you can secure on your cup holder. Then the captions appear on the device, which has things around the screen so nobody but you can see them.

I've also heard of glasses with CC decoders, but I've never tried those

My wife is a little hard of hearing so we always have captions on at home. If they were on at the theater I probably wouldn't even notice. One thing I like about them is sometimes you get extra info that you wouldn't otherwise pick up on....

Exactly, like the names of the characters which haven't been said out loud

Well, you absolutely misunderstood my post then. This wasn't about captions only you can see. It was a survey asking if captions should be permanently on the screen for all viewers. Separate questions for if that should be done on all screens, or just select screens.

I figured you would have to ask them for something. because I remember hearing someone say this at the theater and how they worked.

Yep. I also have captions on at home. So its not too loud to disturb anyone at my house. Especially if its later at night.
