United Kingdom The Thief of Bagdad (1940) - Network

To be released on January 26:

Now listed as DVD

Am trying to contact Network to clarify, probably best to track in the official Network thread

I noticed that, what's going on? I hope they're not bailing on the blu-ray...if they are I hope it's just postponed like Insignificance presumably is...

EDIT: don't think it is cancelled - it's still on the front page of the Network site, the listing's still there on the Network site, and they recently uploaded a clip onto their YouTube channel (just last week):

Maybe Amazon cocked up the listing?

Its the 1940 not the 1924, Criterion havent released the 1940 version.

Eureka recently released the 1924 in the UK

Criterion has released the 1940 version on DVD, which grim_tales owns. He's wondering whether this release is enough of an upgrade.

I have the blu-ray in the French Powell box set. It's a very good transfer. A tiny bit too light, but easily fixed. The sound is no great shakes, but that is to be expected. Well worth getting. It is a significant upgrade over DVD

Same listing we're talking about...there was some confusion - I think it was about a week ago that the listing disappeared entirely (it disappeared from one of my wish lists) then reappeared with the artwork missing and said 'DVD' instead of blu-ray. They've now added the 'Blu-ray' heading back but it still says 'DVD'.

I'm gonna say it's still definitely coming out and someone accidentally deleted the listing or something at Amazon's end. Not been pulled anywhere else.

Crisis averted!

Does it have the Criterion extras? Should I get rid?

sorry, you didn't mention DVD in your post and I assumed as this is a bluray site you were referring to that. Plus, its the blu ray so yes would be worth the upgrade

This is one of the films I'd been hoping Criterion would upgrade to blu-ray. It'll be nice to support Network without having to re-buy films Criterion has already released (This Happy Breed, Black Narcissus, The Lady Vanishes, The Man Who Knew Too Much etc.). Network is my favourite UK distributor at the moment.

I'd love to see more Powell & Pressburger films on blu-ray, especially A Canterbury Tale. I read a couple of years ago that the BFI was working on a restoration but that seems to have gone quiet. Criterion's DVD of A Canterbury Tale was enough to win my loyalty for life!

I don't know if anyone will be answering this anytime soon, but does anyone know if there's a Region Free Blu-Ray of this anywhere? I really want this movie and have been waiting for Criterion to upgrade it for 5 years already.

Based on my research, there is no Region Free version.

Came in to say I bought an Australian edition on Amazon, and it worked on my Region A player.

Best part, while it's an import edition, it was fulfilled by Amazon, and for only $10. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I want to get the Network BD but am balking at the average PQ rating here. I saw the screencaps of the German edition on the Beaver and they were quite good. How does the Network release compare?
