Probably a case of someone being closer to Rubenstein than those at Arrow rather than just a case of money or time.

Considering Arrow are releasing Robocop and Cruising this year, I assume neither their desire to release "lesser known titles" nor their money cost them these licenses.

Hoping this and DAWN OF THE DEAD end up being region free discs.

I don't own any Second Sight releases outside of THE CHANGELING, but from what I read it sounds like their releases are, like Arrow UK, sometimes free, sometimes locked. And I'd love to own both of these releases.

(Or, I could just finally cave in and decide on a cheap, but reliable region free player).

If I were a betting man, I'd put some serious coin on region locked. There's no way that Rubenstein is letting those rights go globally without (more) cash.

Yeah, just get an all-region player. I really can never understand why people are so hesitant to do it.

Back to Martin, John Amplas mentioned on his Facebook page tonight that this disc is coming “this spring”. Take that with a grain of salt, of course, because I’m sure there are a number of things that could potentially slow down production, and Second Sight hasn’t been any more specific than “later this year”, but I just thought it was worth mentioning. I’m sure we’ll get a specific date from them soon enough.

Well lets see if Robocop is just a Blu-ray or 4K. If its just Blu-ray this could be Children of Men all over again

Ended up digging out the Immortal Edition of this tonight after the hype of the blu ray announcement. Still a brilliantly eerie and haunting film, and it's the sort of thing every film student should be watching for inspiration on just 'getting out there and making a movie'. I love what he did with such a tiny budget, and so much of it works perfectly - John Amplas' performance, Donald Rubinstein's score, and the shocking moments still pack a punch.

I watched the 1.33:1 version; for me it's the only one I enjoy visually. I put on the cropped wide-screen afterwards and I just find it a mixed bag framing wise and sort of headache inducing to look at in parts. I also put on the Italian Cut as I'd never seen it before and was very surprised with how different it was - I'd always thought it was just music replacement, and not a re-edit like the Argento cut of DotD.

Considering the budget and the 16mm photography, I still reckon this could finally look decent on blu ray - I always found it a tad ugly on dvd but that's more likely to be down to dated masters, etc (I noted there was no mention of source material for the transfer on the packaging).

I'll have to put some time aside to listen to the commentary this week as it's one of my favourites.

I thought that it was just a different soundtrack as well (I've never seen the Italian cut). My prior understanding was that the only difference was that it used music from Goblin's classic Roller studio album. Interesting to hear that there are other notable differences, now I'm really curious to see it. Hopefully Second Sight can put this version into their forthcoming blu-ray package.

Yeah, the film plays out a bit differently in terms of where the scenes appeared, and looking at the running time it looks like about 15 minutes gets lost somewhere. The change of music alone does something very different to the tone of the film. I've not watched it all yet myself, but I won't spoil anything here and let you discover it for yourself. It would definitely be a cool thing to included as an extra, even if they don't spend much on remastering, etc. Fans would want to see this once, at least.

The already available 4k remaster? You talking better encode thingy? Which might improve slightly but hardly?

It barely offered much over the Sony recalled MPEG2 disc, plus not 1.66:1 and the unrated shots are not amazing at all

Per Facebook:

Quote:
GEORGE A ROMERO’S DAWN OF THE DEAD is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK and will feature ’Theatrical’, ‘Cannes’ and ‘Argento’ cuts!! We will also be releasing on standard Blu-ray together with our Blu-ray release of MARTIN. Many thanks to producer Richard P Rubinstein for allowing us access to the original elements, which includes the original camera negative for Dawn and dupe negative for Martin. New 4K scans are underway at Final Frame in New York which will be followed by grading and extensive restoration supervised by DP Michael Gornick. It will then be over to David Mackenzie at Fidelity in Motion for mastering and encoding. Currently slated for a late summer release, more news to follow….

^Holy Cow, that statement has so much awesomeness packed in. Access to original film elements, DOP supervised restoration, David M supervised master/encode. An OCN scan for Martin would have been even better but heck, I'm not going to complain. Mind Blown!

Martin was shot on 16mm reversal stock, so technically there is no OCN.

People will drop $100+ on new Blu purchases every single week, and yet balk at dropping the same coin on a region-free player that will open a vast treasure chest of goodies to peruse.

I have no idea what that means EJ, could you please lay it down to a layman?
