I was wondering:
Why do you think City hunter didn't become popular in America? Even when CH was released by ADV, I tried looking for more English websites about but could only find Jpn,French, and Italian site mostly. Even now , reading the comments on a CH video, most of the comments are from those areas of the world. In the late 90's-2003, ADV released almost all the anime on VHS and DVD. There was even a brief publishing of the CH manga by Raijin comics in 2003 but it was soon canceled. Do you think ADV marketed it badly? Was it too "stuck in the 80s" for some people? (Enough time hadn't passed for 80s stuff to be seen as cool as it is nowadays?) the TV series which argubably is the best part of the anime was on a VHS subscription service before being released in 2003 en masse on DVD sets. Also, unlike the OVA/movies there was no English dub made for it. Its interesting that discotek is not doing a dub for the TV series. Perhaps to keep cost down? Anyway, I hope that Discotek can release all of the anime on bluray in time. |

Here are a few comparison shots between the ADV DVD (I was nice and didn't capture the frequent ghosting) and Discotek's BD for episode one. Looks like I accidentally grabbed the wrong frame for the last one, though.

Looks really good. Not tons of grain but at least it’s not fully washed off either. Thank you for sharing.
What I’m still waiting for is the release date of the second part of the set. I’m probably not going to watch it till the entire season is available and for that reason I haven’t preordered yet. I just hope it’s around the corner and not in the far distant future the way the Lupin releases have been. |

I got my set today from Amazon and watched the first 2 episodes.
There is a slipcover with the image of Ryo , Kaori, Saeko and all the girls. The menu is basically that shot with , "play, episodes, and subtitles". (On the first disc) The actual Bluray cover is Ryo shooting towards the camera. The image quality is so awesome! The colors pop, not much dirt, and no real "ghosting" so far. As someone who first saw City Hunter TV on ADV's VHS and DVD releases in the late 90s-2003, this is a huge step above imo! The remastering work is superb. The sound is solid and clear. I wish the sound effects were punchier, but thats my only nitpick. I have been watching Batman TAS this past month and was spoiled by their sound effects lol The subtitles are a easy to read yellow font and the OP and Ending songs are teal or aqua color. The Op and ENDING sequences do not have English "overlays" so the song translation at the bottom is the only element added. Signs are subtitled in white. The back of the disc lists textless op and ED sequences, but it wasnt on the first disc. I Guess they are on the second disc? Anyway, I recommend CH fans to get this. I am looking forward to Discotek's further CH releases and hope we won't have to wait too long for the next set. Last edited by jignat; 02-29-2020 at 01:25 AM. |

Regarding the subtitles , I feel like 90% of the dialogue is the same.
There are a few small changes. Like Ryo referring to Natsumi as"hot" . ADV said "sexy babe" There are some modern slang terms like "deets" and punked" |

Sounds like a fantastic package. I wonder why Discotek isn't doing much effort at promoting it. I hope sales are strong, but I also hope they don't read too much into it since it's still an incomplete season. I don't know anyone who bought it yet (I haven't either), as everyone's waiting for at least the season to be fully available.

Who is credited with doing the new subtitles for the blu-ray? Should be in the on-disc credits somewhere.

Me and my friend were talking about anime comfort food and City Hunter came up - specifically 'Goodbye My Sweetheart' AKA The Movie (when ADV released it). The movie was fun and I enjoyed myself, but holy crap - that disc didn't age well, at all. I mean I guess I shouldn't ask much from a DVD that is old enough to be of legal drinking age - but holy crap was that some poor video.
I will be grabbing any and all City Hunter Blus straight away! |

Did Japan ever remaster the other CH anime besides the TV series?
Has Discotek mentioned if all CH products will be solely on bluray or will their releases be a mixture of BD and DVD? |
