Yep, B7 needs a good going over in packages up to the standard of the Who ones

Though if the issues with B7E blocking certain extras are still around, there's not much point.

I just dread anyone getting hold of it cos of the mess they might make of it.
I'd rather stick with the DVD.
I've never noticed any of the things that Kieran mentioned. I guess I've got cloth eyes.

I expect they will make a new/improved recon when the time comes. But Season 5 will probably be one of the last alongside Season 3 in order to leave time between the separate animated releases.

Default Season 4

Am I right that Season 4 is the only season with not a single complete story extant?

Quite a lot missing there.

But by the same token, all telesnaps exist for Season 4 and it has also been mostly animated so it will be simple to present comprehensive visual material for every story.

Season 3 and 6 are the problematic ones. The Space Pirates (Season 6) has very little visual material existing aside from the relatively self-contained episode 2 (in terms of sets and characters) and no telesnaps. The Myth Makers, The Daleks' Master Plan and The Massacre will all be incredibly difficult for the same reasons as The Space Pirates. The Celestial Toymaker thankfully has a decent amount of photographs despite having no telesnaps.

Season 6 isn't that problematic though - even if we didn't get animation or full recon for The Space Pirates, every other story is "complete" with the 2 animated episodes of The Invasion. Season 6 is also one of the rumoured ones to have already been worked on.

Now here's a question: what if, a few months after this comes out, someone walks into the BBC and says "I've got some Doctor Who films" and it's the missing stuff from The Crusade or a complete The Time Meddler (which is still missing 12 seconds (I know) from the end of the fourth episode due to censor cuts). Do they issue a new single-disc BD with the recovered episodes?

I have to assume they won't do that, but rather they'll include them on a future Collection release. Ideally, that would be on the set that's "closest" to the returned episodes (for example, putting rediscovered episodes from The Crusade on the S3 set, since they couldn't go on the S2 set), but as long as they're released on some Blu-ray format, I'll be happy.

Now, I could see the single-disc release happening if the episodes are returned after the last Collection set has been release. I guess time will tell - it always does!

As the old saying goes, “I’ve got two balls, dear, and neither of them are crystal.”

Kind of depends on what exactly was found/returned. Full episodes would almost certainly prompt a standalone release of whatever serial it was from. Fragments, would likely be wedged on a subsequent release where ever felt most appropriate.

I think at best at this point we could see orphan episodes here and there as and when they surface. Paul seems certain that a small number (6?) of missing episodes exist in private hands. Those could appear tomorrow, ten years from now, or never. Either way more likely than anything further being returned by Indiana Morris, who clearly the Beeb have now figured as a BS merchant.

Haven't all those missing episodes been animated though?

Amazon have just e-mailed me to say the release date is December 12.

I would hope if the missing Crusades episode (or any other missing episodes after a set has been released) they will release a disc with the same design that can be slipped into the collection set - that would be the best and most sensible option for fans.

HMV still have the release date down as 5th December at the moment - these release dates are always fluid. Maybe it’s a mercury issue!

I would hope that season 3, 4 and 5 are left until later in the range. 3 and 4 are the most problematic, much of season 5 has been animated so would not be overly concerned about that being released until later.

Season 1 and season 6 just have Marco Polo and The Space Pirates, other odd missing episodes have been animated.

Ambassadors of Death is the most problematic from season 7, Invasion of the Dinosaurs episode 1 is the problem for season 11. All the rest should be fairly straightforward in terms of quality of the episodes.

It will be interesting to see what they do with Silver Nemesis for season 25. There was an extended version on video but just included things as deleted scenes on DVD. There was also a US documentary which didn’t survive the leap from VHS to DVD, presumably for rights issues.

I'd definetly be up for a longer SILVER NEMESIS - one of the worst Doctor Who stories, but paradoxically one of my favourites.

Yeah, IIRC it was rights issues that prevented its use on DVD. Hopefully it can be sorted for a Blu-ray.

As for the extended cut - I imagine what has happened elsewhere in the range will apply. Curse of Fenric and Battlefield had 3 versions each on season 26, albeit already existing cuts. Seasons 23 & 24 had the broadcast versions and early edits with completed soundtrack especially for disc. So, going by that I guess we'll get broadcast cut and VHS cut, and likely the early edits which feature more than the VHS did with a soundtrack completed especially for Blu-ray. 5.1 on all is likely a given too.

I’m not sure whether there is sufficient additional material for extended cuts of the other stories in season 25. Would definitely be up for an extended Remembrance of the Daleks if there is material. I know there was an extended version of the scene where the Doctor confronts Davros.

Something along the lines of the Doctor saying he’s far more than just another Time Lord. Although probably best to forget that, that’s probably where Chibnall stole the idea of the Timeless Child from.
