Default Audio format matter for sound bar?

Somewhat of a noob question, but does audio format (dolby, DTS, PCM) matter for a 2.1 Sound Bar through optical?

My disc player is sending uncompressed audio to my TV. My TV can't decode DTS but my sound bar can. So should I be changing the output it sends to the soundbar to PCM or keep it at Dolby. Or, because it's only 2.1, does it really not matter anyway?

PCM will ensure lossless 2.0 going to the amp. Going though the TV limits everything to lossy DD in bitstream.

The best option of course would be sending the audio via HDMI direct as bitstream to the bar, if you can do that with it.
