She's a fragile angel that you just want to protect, she's a beauty that hasn't been seen in a long time.

I think Gail Russell was a bit fragile in real life. This from the IMDB:

"In 1961, at the age of 36, she died alone in her apartment of chronic alcoholism, an extremely fatty liver and terminal aspiration of stomach contents all while surrounded by empty liquor bottles".

She was indeed a fragile beauty, in fact she was so fragile John Wayne felt compelled to try and protect her as much as he could. A situation that resulted in the sped up dissolution of his second marriage.

Congrats Wayne fans... we are now officially over 1,000 posts on this thread! May not seem like a big deal...but I think it speaks to the love of the Duke’s movies!

The Train Robbers vudu.com/redeem or flixster.com/getUV digital code:

CJQXXKTMG6MF

I notice that, though the blu-ray just arrived today, the digital code says, 'Must Redeem Code By 6/2/18'. Thanks, Amazon!

If it works or doesn't work, please post here when finished...thanks.

Sorry. It must not be a big seller, if it has been sitting in an Amazon warehouse so long that the digital code is 2 years out-of-date.

Not a bad film, but nothing special, either...

True, a fun little film, but nothing memorable. I think it’s strength lies in the bond these men have with one another, and the chance they get for one last adventure to revisit their past glory days.

What does everybody think of Reap The Wild Wind? I've never actually seen it and am curious... looks beautiful from a production standpoint in the screenshots I've seen, but I've read it doesnt amount to much.

It certainly is gorgeous, but in terms of being an all time classic, it's one of my least watched John Wayne movies. But it is notable in the John Wayne canon for being the first time he was paired up with a superstar director, outside of John Ford.

Cecil B. Demille was the proto Spielberg or Bay, depending on how you feel about his movies. He was a blockbuster directer of grand scale movies, huge movies with immense vision for spectacle.

Reap the Wild Wind is certainly no different, it's a sweeping story of love, greed, betrayal, redemption. It has spectacular special effects for the era and a lot of it holds up well today.

It's certainly not a bad movie, and you could certainly do worse. I'll always say it's worth a viewing and definitely worth owning to revisit it once in a while.

Regarding Gail Russell, this site has a nice write up about her that I came across a while back.

Thanks. I came across the underwater sequences on line while trying to figure out the name of another giant squid movie from my childhood and it looked pretty cool. I'm a sucker for sea and undersea adventure movies and for Wayne, so I might bite...

Anybody got any idea when The Shootist may ever get released in US or know if any imports would be worth it? Also looking forward to The Alamo and Sons of Katie Elder.

I did, thanks! It was 20,000 Leagues- which has a giant squid fight that is as amazing as the rest of the movie isn't. I saw it at a Mr. Gatti's Pizza on a large screen projection system when I was six living in Tennessee. I thought
it might have been Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, but it was that one. But when I saw the footage from Reap The Wild Wind, I thought this movie has GOT to be amazing.

Has anyone ever come across an edition of THE MAN FROM UTAH (1934) with its original music score and not that God awful synthesizer score that replaced it somewhere along the line? The last time I saw it with the 1934 release score was on the late late show on a local Chicago channel in the 70’s. I’ve always enjoyed this early Duke film, but seeing it with electronic music is a travesty.

Thanks for posting this link! What a tragic career. I think she was amazing in Angel and the Bad Man with Wayne and also in the Uninvited. It’s just a shame she couldn’t escape her personal demons.

Honestly at this point, I think that the Shootist may never be released unless a boutique somehow gets it. Although, I am curious to see what happens with the Paramount Presents line.

A few years ago I ordered the German edition of the Shootist and was quite happy with it. I don't know about the others.

Now that you mention, I don't believe I have seen the movie with its original score since I had watched it on VHS 25 years ago. All I know is that the synthesized score is abominable. Ironically it was done so they could lay claim to the copyright. Now that's practically the only copy widely available.

Is there any chance of the extended director’s cut of The Alamo getting released, even on SD DVD?

This is from 2014 and as far as I can tell nothing has changed.
It is a heartbreaking read for any fan of the Duke but here you go....

https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/m...ts/052814_1330

"It appears that MGM has chosen to allow the film to die, as no immediate action will be taken, with elements just one stage above that of industrial waste. A pity, but one of many in the library."
