Default Sony X900F Freezing (Netflix buffering)?

Just purchased the X900F and although I've really enjoyed the TV, the past 2 days Netflix streaming has gotten stuck on buffering when loading shows and completely freezes the TV- can't back out of the app or power off the TV from the remote, have to unplug it.

Has anyone experienced this with a Sony TV (or this model in particular)?

I tried to troubleshoot it and uninstall the app and reinstall it and since it has worked fine but I'm still a little paranoid as I didn't expect an issue with the tv after 2 days.

Thanks so much and any recommendations you have are appreciated.

I've got a 65" Sony 900C and a 43" Sony 830C (both purchased in early 2016) and the Netflix on both of them are horrible. I've had the freezing issues you described, buffering issues I don't have with other devices, and times when it'd just suddenly stop working. This issue hasn't purely been with Netflix, it's happened with pretty much every app. I eventually got to the point where I just use a Fire TV on both TVs for apps.

thanks for the feedback. pretty frustrating.

since its a new tv im wondering if I should exchange for a different unit or just hope the app updates/live with it if it doesn't. ill keep a close eye on it for the 15 day window with best buy for sure

Unless you have a damaged screen (scratches/excessive dead pixels), a blank screen or other such problems I would keep it. You could end up with a real problem with the next one. Dodgy apps are a fact of life and not a sign of a defective tv. There are other tvs that have apps that may run more smoothly, but I've been impressed with the build quality of Sony over other manufacturers, and Sony's picture and motion capabilities are second to none. Stay away from LG. They are junk, even the expensive ones. Or buy a Roku for your Sony, a cheap and effective solution.

thanks and great feedback.

the issue that bothered me the most was the lack of response from the remote to the tv (did nothing, although sony logo lit up every button press) and even physically pushing the power button on the tv didn't work. It was like the app itself was affecting the entire tv, not just the performance of the app itself.

is that rare or more or less what you were speaking of?

Pretty common stuff. All high end tech has hiccups like this. You pay a premium price to test new tech. I doubt there is anything wrong with the tv. A firmware update or update to the app will likely solve it shortly. Most of these tvs go into standby. Read the instruction manual. It's likely you can power down by holding down the power button on the remote briefly, instead of unplugging it. My Sony A1E has this feature. In any event, it's likely a rare event and not a sign of a defective tv.

Well my sony 930 e just goes into a low power mode when you turn it off. I normally give mine a restart once a week.

Do you have the tv directly wired to your modem, or are you using Wi-Fi? I have 5 Sony tv's. 55x810c, 55x900c, 65A1E, 65x900f and 75Z9D. I have never had any issues with Netflix. I have the best internet from Comcast and 3 out of my 5 sets are hardwired lan directly. It may not be your tv it could be your router or your internet. The only time I ever had buffering was when I had the lower tier service and was trying to run multiple devices at once.

Most BD and UHD players have Netflix anyway, just use that.

A lot of TVs have a very limited data capacity on WiFi, usually about 10mbps or something. So anything in HD or 4K is liable to exceed that capacity and lead to buffering and eventually locking up the app.

With few exceptions, most apps on TV's & disc players are actually "smaller" or lite versions of the same ones available with Roku or Apple TV. I had the same problems too, even when the TV is hard wired to the internet, these apps either shut down or buffer. I think the core problem is the lack of cache memory these have access to on the TV's and disc players.

I bought both a Roku Ultra and an Apple TV for separate sets in the house. Since I now use these devices, the problems of buffering and or shutting down have been eliminated. Yes, I know, some will ask "what is the point if the TV/disc players have the same apps?" Well, somehow, they do behave differently, and I've also noticed that the apps on both Roku & Apple TV are more detailed and in-depth than those on the TV. For example, I can access Hulu live TV on both the Roku & ATV, none of these options are available on the same apps on the TV/disc player.

Yep, I know, its an added expense. And the ATV with 64GB mem is nearly $200 (though, you may find it cheaper at some places!) but it IS worth it IMO and well worth the extra expense.

I have the Sony 900e and I haven't experienced any issues watching Netflix 4k. Not even one buffer over wifi.

Sony TVs apps are horrible. Their entire lineup has horrible android software. I had 5 Sony TVs in last 4 years and everyone of them sucked, except the HX800 Gorilla Glass high end 1080P 3D TV. I miss that one, but the 850C, 850D, and now 900E which is probably one of the better ones in recent years all suck. Got Apple TVs in every room and I could care less if my TVs even have any apps or cool menus. Also have a Samsung KS8500 and while the software and apps are much better, the Vudu app gets stuck. Apple TV now has all I need.

I have the 75x900F and haven't had any problem streaming 4k content or any freezing issues, using uverse internet 25mbps
